Working with burr...

I've just re-sawn this very ancient Oak burr for a secret project, and wanted a quick way to bring up the potential colour without permanently marking or harming it.

I don't want to add water or an oil finish, and I've seen people using a rub of alcohol spirits, so I thought I'd try the trusty brake and clutch cleaner.

Good colour, and within 3 minutes it's all evaporated.

One from the site milling archives....

Log arches are a great way to move decent sized sawlogs without bringing in really hefty equipment for a single lift.

If I remember correctly, this was a Taxodium (Swamp Cypress) in a customer's garden.

While the light in the workshop is so perfect, it's a shame not to document some of the amazing textures and colours in the timber stock racks ✨️

If you're not considering UK grown timbers in your designs and projects, maybe it's time for a rethink?

Planing up Ash boards

We milled these beautiful 8in wide boards from Ash trees that grew just under Chanctonbury Ring on the rolling, wonderful South Downs a few miles down the road.

After facing, straightening one edge, and then thicknessing, I'll be gluing them up to form wider panels for a commission locally.

If this Ash wasn't used to create beautiful, useful sawn timber products, it would have ended up as firewood, so it's great to be involved with something longer lasting.

More boards of this size and many others are available for your projects, too...

I've just had a really positive unscheduled visit from our local Rural Crime Team.

It's great to know that there are well informed eyes and ears out there who have an in-depth knowledge of the terrain, people, and equipment that's vulnerable to theft and damage locally.

With an isolated rural business, it's good that there is a system and personnel in place who won't be out of their depth with some of the kit and premises that are found away from the High Street.

I've been brought back onto the SelectaDNA database system, which is used to tag, catalogue and identify the small tools and larger equipment with a unique marking 'fingerprint' that can be brought up in future by police forces across the UK and Europe.

Yes, it might not do anything to prevent the theft itself, but potentially any abandoned or recovered goods may come home, or indeed lead to a better level of prosecution.

I was very taken with the Suzuki Jimny (can you tell? 😅), I've seen them out and about, but it's good to see one close up- they really are the perfect nimble vehicle for scuttling around into the quiet corners where stolen equipment tends to get stashed and hidden.

We're just cleaning up and sorting a batch of Boxwood that's come in from a local forestry team.

There are some really exceptional sized sections here, and we'll be planking and carefully storing most of the larger pieces. If there are any sizes that you require for your own future projects, do please get in touch.

There are a few crates of the smaller sections, these will be kept whole and end sealed as part of our turnery stock.

We're open this weekend of the 25th and 26th for the April retail Open Days, so by all means come along for a cuppa, a browse and a chat about Boxwood and timber in general...
