"Who's this tiny little wallflower?" 🌼

It's a question Gracie's manager asked herself when the apprentice started at Citizens Advice Gateshead, but not one that would cross her mind today.

"Her confidence has grown so much. She's funny, engaging, she gets involved and she's become a fully integrated part of the team", explains Head of Marketing and Communications Kievah Wallace.

That growth is something Content Creator apprentice Gracie has noticed too.

"I'm probably most proud of how much my confidence has grown," she says. "I've noticed the difference even outside of work."

"Marketing and communications changes incredibly quickly," explains Kievah.

"Having somebody who's grown up with social media, short-form video and digital content gives you a different viewpoint."

"Young people bring fresh ideas, fresh perspectives and different experiences. That's incredibly valuable."

"I’d been struggling to find work for a while. I spoke to my work coach, and she recommended doing a course at Learning and Skills."

After joining our Digital Skills course at Gateshead Civic Centre, Samantha discovered there was much more to learn than she expected.

"I’m passionate about computers, so I thought I knew a lot about PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc. But I was quite surprised at the number of new skills I was able to learn."

Samantha has since progressed onto our Business Administration Level 2 course, where she’s developing knowledge of business, communication and workplace practices.

"Doing these courses through Learning and Skills has given me a lot of determination and hope. I’ve been unemployed for a long time, but I’ve now got a lot more confidence, which is what I really needed."

For anyone considering their next step, Samantha has a simple message:

"If you’re looking for work, I’d say to get in touch with the Learning and Skills team. The staff are really friendly and there are plenty of opportunities available to do qualifications which could help you into a career."

The next Digital Skills course starts on Tuesday 10 November at Gateshead Civic Centre. It's a chance to develop practical skills for employment, study and everyday tasks, as well as achieve a Level 2 qualification.

Our Business Development Officer, Olly, is attending the Early Years Conference, ran by Gateshead Council's Education, Schools and Inclusion team.

We can't wait to meet Early Years professionals and chat about all the different ways they can improve their staffing capabilities through apprenticeships.

Olly said: "People who work in Early Years are often surprised about how accessible apprenticeships are. Whether they need to recruit new staff or would like to enhance the skills of their team members, we're here to help.

That's why Bexhill Academy enrolled two of their teaching assistants on our Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship.

Debbie Lewis, Early Years Foundation Stage Assistant Headteacher at the school, told us all about their experience so far, including:

"We wanted someone who became part of the business... it wasn't about bringing someone in for a specific job. It's about Owen being here long term."

That's why Tyne Tees Ceramics Ltd chose to take on an apprentice.

Owner Clare Craven wanted to invest in someone who could learn different areas of the business, grow with the company and become a valued member of the team.

Today, apprentice Owen is already taking on new responsibilities, with plans for additional training and development in the future.

Clare found Owen with the help of our dedicated team and our free recruitment service:
