Three questions we hear from HSE Managers more than any others:

Three things we hear about Process Safety more often than we'd like:

"HAZOP is just a box-ticking exercise."
A properly run HAZOP finds the failure modes nobody thought to ask about, before they become an incident report.

"If it passed HAZID, it's covered."
HAZID identifies the hazards. HAZOP is where you actually work through how each one could go wrong, and what stops it.

"We'll deal with it after the design's finished."
By then, the cheapest and most effective fixes, the ones built into the design itself, are already off the table.

Good process safety work happens early, not as a final check before commissioning.

The terms ATEX and DSEAR are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) is the UK legislation that requires employers to identify and assess the risks from dangerous substances, classify hazardous areas, and implement appropriate control measures.

ATEX refers to the European framework for managing risks in potentially explosive atmospheres, covering both workplace requirements and equipment intended for use in hazardous areas.

Put simply:

✅ DSEAR (UK Law) focuses on identifying, assessing and controlling explosion risks in UK workplaces.

✅ ATEX provides the framework that supports the safe design, selection and use of equipment and systems in hazardous areas.

Whether you're working to DSEAR in the UK or ATEX requirements elsewhere in Europe, the objective is the same: understanding the risk, classifying hazardous areas correctly, and ensuring the right controls, equipment and procedures are in place.

We've had a refresh 🙌

New-look HQ, same team behind it.

Over the past few months, we've invested in transforming our office into a space that properly reflects how the team works day to day, and the standards we hold ourselves to on site. So when it came to our own space, we wanted somewhere that makes the planning side easier.

We asked Elle Fulcher-Fenty, our Commercial Director, who led the refurbishment from start to finish, what it means to see it finished:
