Joining us at the next Platform session at Phoenix will be Noah Hopley-Jones.

Noah began his career at the Phoenix and has since moved into film development at BBC Film.

Noah will chat about BBC Apprenticeships, career pathways, the value of entry-level roles, skills and practices that supported his progression, plus insight into his day-to-day work at BBC Film.

If you’re looking to get into the film industry and discover those vital routes to where you want to go then bring yourself along, it would be lovely to see you.

Short Platform had a fabulous night at Phoenix last night, screening eleven independent short films from across the region to a packed screen one. Special mentions go out to Harry Tatem, Declan Smith, Charles Leggat, Jon Ellison, Oliver Woolridge, Ela Raofi, Khadijah Islam, Rob Sladden, Bob Hartshorn, Estelle Phillips, Daniel M.Thomas, Yusufamrat Raheem and Hynek Gannon.

Congratulations to Hynek Gannon who was awarded the Professional Development Award. The award is made possible through the partnership of The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity Phoenix and Platform. Huge thanks to Anne Whitlock for joining us last night and awarding Hynek. Please do visit the STWLC website to see what they can do to help you develop your career.

Big thanks to all the filmmakers, writers, cast and crews from all the films submitted, everyone who attended last night and everyone who helps Short Platform happen.

Short Platform will return later this year to showcase and foreground the work of filmmakers from across the Midlands.

The next Platform session will take place on March 19th with Noah Hopley-Jones discussing BBC apprenticeships and career pathways in film.

This evening Short Platform returns to Phoenix screening eleven amazing short independently made short films.

As part of the screening, we will announce our first Professional Development Award of £250 to a Leicester based member of one of the productions. The award has been generously donated by the The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity and we’ll be joined by Anne Whitlock for the presentation of the award.

The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity provides personal loans for new business ideas, businesses needing investment and for the study of postgraduate education. Eligible candidates may borrow up to £20,000 for business purposes and up to £10,000 for postgraduate education purposes, to establish themselves in their chosen career. All loans are personal loans which are interest free for 9 years, repayable by equal instalments after 3 years, and are available to people aged over 18 and under 45. Short Platform returns to Phoenix on the 26th February to screen eleven amazing independently made short films.

Our final featured film is The Cutbacks written and directed by Robert Sladden

A work call takes a dark turn when one of the team accidentally leaves their camera on.

At Short Platform we like to work with other screenings in the city to highlight their evenings and showcase some of the films they receive. The Cutbacks is appearing from the Short Sharp Shocks selection courtesy of Bob Hartshorn and Estelle Phillips They will be appearing along with the writer/director Rob Sladden for a Q&A.

Short Platform returns to Phoenix on the 26th February to screen eleven amazing independently made short films.

Our tenth featured film is Attack of the Killer Blackcurrants created by Jon Ellison

On the strange planet of Suci, a robot named Caseus finds himself in a sticky situation when he’s ambushed by an army of giant, juice-filled blackcurrants.

This is Jon’s first 3D animated short film. Production began in 2020 during the COVID lockdown. Originating from a couple of hand-drawn animated shorts and inspired by numerous sci-fi B-Movies, the animation developed into the short film we’ll see this Thursday.

Our ninth featured film is Freewheel written and directed by Hynek Gannon

In the heart of the West Midlands, seasoned bikers struggle to keep their fading culture alive while mentoring the youth of Coventry. Through grit and determination, they navigate personal and societal challenges, forging bonds that transcend generations.

Hynek’s film explores a tight-knit community of seasoned bikers fighting to preserve a fading culture. As they mentor the next generation of riders in Coventry, the film captures moments of resilience, identity, and belonging. Through shared roads, hard-earned wisdom, and mutual respect, bonds form across generations. The work offers an intimate look at how passion becomes purpose, and how mentorship can carve a path forward amid social change.

Our eighth featured film is The Ignoramus written and directed by Charles Leggat

A comedy about a domestic argument, with a twist.

This film was shot on a mobile phone in a single morning with a single cast member and a single crew member, using only two locations.

Our seventh featured film is The Watchers written and directed by Daniel Michael Thomas

James walks alone through a strange forest, where he finds a dead body, his own. A being appears and reveals himself to be The Watcher. The Watcher insinuates they have met before, but James has no memory of this. Who and what is the watcher and why has James found himself dead?
