Giving Wooden Pallets Another Life: A Closed-Loop Solution to Pallet Recycling ♻️

Every year, around 20 million pallets are used across the UK. It used to be that these were then skipped or scrapped after just one use but there is now an increasing drive to adopt more environmentally responsible practices and reduce the impact of pallets.

Due to their material, pallets can either be recycled or reused, depending on their condition after use. Most of the wood used to make pallets is similar in quality to the lumber used to make furniture and other durable items. As a result, pallets can often be reused multiple times over in their intended form, with only minor refurbishment where necessary.

By extending the lifecycle of pallets through either repair or recycling, we can significantly reduce the demand for virgin wood. It also helps to lower carbon emissions associated with the entire process including such as logging, manufacturing and transportation.

Wildflowers: why they matter! 🌼🌻🌱🐝🐞

Over this bank holiday, you may be using the extra time to get out and tidy your gardens up. While we all love a neat and tidy garden, it is also important to recognise the wildflowers that may grow and why we need them.

💡Did you know that all flowers found in our gardens have been bred specifically for certain features, but they all actually originate from wildflowers?

Wildflowers and wildflower rich habitats e.g. meadows, are vital to provide valuable support for insects and other wildlife. Pollinators, such as bees, butterflies and many more rely on wildflowers as a vital source of food. But unfortunately, wildflowers are under threat as over the last 70 years there has been a shift towards larger-scale and intense farming combined with increasing urbanisation which has led to the destruction of wildflowers habitats across the UK.

Remember...
🌼 More wildflowers = more pollinators
🐝 More pollinators = better, healthier crops for us

Welsh Workplace Recycling Scheme Updates! 📢

The Welsh Government introduced Workplace Recycling back in 2024, to improve the quality and quantity coming out of workplaces and improve the consistency in how it is separated and collected.

The newest change to this legislation is the introduction of small waste electrical and electronic equipment (sWEEE) item recycling.

From the 6th April 2026, it is now law for all small electricals to be separated from other waste and recycling streams for onward recycling.

Earth Day 2026 🌎

This year’s theme, ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, reflects a fundamental truth: environmental progress doesn’t rely on any single administration. It’s driven by the daily actions of communities, educators, workers and families protecting the places where they live and work.

Sustainability is central to how we operate at Reconomy Connect. We focus on turning environmental responsibility into practical action, whether that’s improving resource efficiency or supporting circular economy solutions. Every step counts.
We’re continually working to:
🔹 find innovative ways to reuse materials
🔹 gather data that reveals where resource value is being lost
🔹 extend the lifecycle of resources

As a collective, it is important that we keep the momentum going so progress continues every day towards a more sustainable future!

Last week, we loved supporting the Colas Area 9 team with a work experience project for KS4 students!

The students from Albright Education Centre, were tasked with creating a new wellbeing garden area for a local Colas depot and they spent the week discussing ideas and perfecting their designs. Thank you Russell Fleetwood, Key Account Director at Reconomy Connect, for supporting and guiding the team on sustainable thinking 👏

We love being able to share knowledge about circularity and sustainability, topics we are truly passionate about and see the students apply this to their ideas.

We are delighted to be working in partnership with the National Trust Dunham Massey (Cheshire) on their waste and resource management 🤝

We recently installed a new split chamber compactor that handles both General Waste and Dry Mixed Recycling, including Cardboard. The compactor reduces vehicle movement related Scope 3 carbon emissions by around 86% and avoids around 7 operator hours per week bailing cardboard too.

We are looking forward to working closely to achieve their sustainability goals and towards zero waste! ♻️
