We have partnered with Extra to tackle waste cross-contamination and boost recycling at motorway service stations 🚮

Extra MSA, an operator of ten motorway service stations across England, needed to address persistent contamination issues associated with public-facing bins. The partnership has seen success in increasing recycling rates, taking average rates from 18% prior to the project to 36% by April 2025. It has also reduced spend on bin bags and waste handling, with no increase in labour hours, alongside improved staff engagement and ownership of sustainability outcomes.

David Gudgeon, Head of External Affairs, said: “This evidence-led approach not only reduced contamination and improved recycling rates, but also provides a model that can be applied across other sites and sectors. It shows that with the right data and process, we can make recycling simple, effective, and measurable across the retail and hospitality sector.”

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting the Supply Chain Sustainability School's Homes Leadership Group at our Telford office.

We had great conversations with the various group partners about actions surrounding carbon reduction, supplier engagement and collective actions in the Homes sector.

Supply Chain Sustainability School: Summit 2026 ✅

Yesterday, we attended the Supply Chain Sustainability School’s in-person Summit, hearing from a range of inspiring speakers about putting people at the centre of sustainability decisions and moving towards a net positive future.

Karen Markey, Head of Housebuilding at Reconomy Connect, shared some of her key takeaways from the day:
🔹 Design and procurement are key opportunities. When asked where the greatest sustainability opportunity is lost on most projects today, the audience identified the design and procurement phases as the biggest barriers.
🔹 Collaboration, engagement and communication matter. Working together and maintaining strong communication are key drivers of improved sustainability performance.
🔹 Better data leads to better performance. Enhanced data and reporting can have a significant impact on sustainability outcomes.
🔹 Empowered teams drive change. Success comes from building awareness and empowering capable teams to take ownership of sustainability as part of their everyday roles.
🔹 Collaboration = confidence = innovation. A key message from the Summit is that collaboration can build confidence, which in turn creates the foundations for innovation.

This week, David Gudgeon, Head of External Affairs at Reconomy, contributed to an article with MRW, looking at the circular economy role in securing critical mineral supplies.

It is important for the UK and Europe to prioritise efforts to build more circular supply chains for critical minerals that are a vital component of greener technologies. This is to help prevent too many valuable materials from being disposed of rather than recovered.

Matchday waste transformed into an outdoor bench ♻️⚽

Recently, as part of Wolves Foundation's Premier League Primary Stars programme, the pupils at St Mary's Primary School were set a challenge to come up with a way to reduce the waste generated on Wolves matchdays.

They wanted to turn the plastic waste collected into something they could use everyday at the school and came up with the idea of creating a bench! Using 60kg of plastic waste, collected from just one matchday, we were delighted to help bring their idea to life. Once collected, we segregated and recycled plastic waste from the final Wolves home game of the season, which was then manufactured into a new bench for the school!

As a proud Pack Patron to Wolves Foundation, it was a brilliant project to be involved in and just one example of how waste can be given a new purpose – and how great ideas can make a real difference! ⭐

"Circularity means finding the most combatable solution for our customers no matter how wild the requests get. I believe that there is always a solution to be explored!"

🏉 Favourite sport to watch/play?
"I play rugby currently and really love that, but I did play netball for 10+ years before that. I support Gloucester Rugby in both women and men’s game"
