A year ago I made the decision to move in to CARE with an agency in private homes and estates and also some social services clients. The humility, dignity and respect the team at this agency provide regardless of a clients status is second to none. I’ve learnt so much about how to professionally care for someone but also learnt so much about myself and my capabilities. It’s pretty scary going in to a home alone🙃
This week I resigned from the agency, not because they were bad (total respect for this team who have been doing this for years) but because I’ve gained 3 private clients that need my full time attention so I’ve been running 2 jobs and still teaching Pilates.
I honestly believe my entire fitness career has been about steering me in to care!
Tonight I was able to help a 105 year old lady up to her walker who was stuck in her chair from limited leg strength (atrophy and sarcapenia) which can happen to us all through illness, ago or lack of usage. I got in my car and just cried for lots of reasons, mainly cause she was hoping I’d come again soon🙏 and I knew I’d only be around for the next few weeks.
I teach clients to extend their legs to take the pressure off pressure areas, I teach mobility and regularly mobilise clients who are either paralysed or whose brain is not responding as quickly to moving. I do boxing, agility work, core, postural work and most importantly I make it fun!
Some visits are just welfare checks … the only person they see or speak to in a day are us🙏 (even with families).
I’ve dealt with some pretty ‘wild’ comments this year too, like ‘you must be well paid driving a classic sports car’, to ‘ good on ya but I couldn’t do it’ (and insensitive harsher ones) Well you don’t have to🙃. How do you react to that!
I had my own reasons at the beginning of going in to care ….. mainly to understand the system and what happened with my grandad and dad🙏
I could go on about the inequality and injustices but I’m forever grateful🙏
