☀️🚗 SUMMER ROAD TRIP READY? 🚗☀️

Before you load up the family and head off on your summer adventures, make sure your car is ready for the journey!

A few quick checks could save you from a breakdown, costly repairs, or an uncomfortable trip.

✅ Tyres – Check pressures, tread depth (minimum 1.6mm), sidewalls and your spare wheel.
✅ Oil & Coolant – Low levels can lead to overheating in hot weather.
✅ Battery – If it's over 3 years old or showing signs of weakness, get it checked.
✅ Wipers & Screen Wash – Summer storms, insects and tree sap can quickly affect visibility.
✅ Lights & Indicators – Ensure you're visible and safe on the road.
✅ Air Conditioning – If it's not cooling efficiently, it could be costing you money and putting extra strain on the system.

Approved Mileage Allowance Payment, or AMAP changes 2026!

You’d have to be living under a rock in the outback if you haven’t seen these long awaited changes!

Finally, the UK government has announced an increase in the tax-free business mileage rate (Approved Mileage Allowance Payment, or AMAP)
for the first time in 15 years, raising it from 45p to 55p per mile.

For insight here is a simple explanation of how it works.

If you’re unsure contact your tax advisor or accountant.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed the 10p increase on 21 May 2026 as part of a cost-of-living support package. The increase is backdated to 6 April 2026 for the 2026/27 tax year.

The exact changes across different vehicle and scheme categories are outlined below:

Cars and Vans (First 10,000 miles): Increased to 55p per mile (up from 45p).

Cars and Vans (Over 10,000 miles): Unchanged at 25p per mile.

Electric Cars: Qualify for the exact same 55p per mile rate as petrol/diesel vehicles when privately owned and used for business travel.

Motorcycles: Unchanged at 24p per mile.

Bicycles: Unchanged at 20p per mile.

Passenger Payments: Unchanged at 5p per passenger per business mile.

HMRC Business Mileage Rate Changes (AMAPs)
These changes apply to employees using their personal vehicles for business travel, as well as self-employed individuals using the simplified expenses regime.

Let’s put the same £35 into an electric car.

The image shows £35 buying just 22.8 litres of petrol at 154.9p per litre.

If your petrol car does around 40mpg, that’s roughly 200 miles of driving.

Now compare that to an EV charging overnight at 7p per kWh.

£35 ÷ £0.07 = 500 kWh

At an average efficiency of 4 miles per kWh, that gives 2,000 miles of driving.

So for the same £35…

Petrol car: 200 miles.
EV at home: 2,000 miles.

That’s 10x more miles for the same money.

People can argue about whether they personally want an EV or not, but the running cost difference when charging at home on an off-peak tariff is absolutely enormous.

There is obviously the caveat that public charging can be expensive and not everyone can charge at home.

This is why informed choice and content like this is important.

People should drive what they want, and what suits them and their preference…

But people should also have access to informed choice, and limiting that because of a personal opinion lacking and real knowledge is morally wrong.
