Rendells Auctioneers at Stonepark, Ashburton continue with their monthly auctions and the next one will be held on 18th & 19th June which will include a specialist section of postcards, stamps and ephemera.

One notable consignment includes a quantity of artistic stained glass panels (of various sizes), and also a folio of stained glass designs and artwork, by Tony Attenborough who was later the stained glass tutor at The Central School of Art; these works were part of his student portfolio for entry to the Royal College of Art in London. There is also a collage work of a stained glass design by Pauline Boty, who was one of the co-founders of the British Pop Art movement in the 1960’s – probably a student work from her time at the Wimbledon School of Art.

Auctions always have something for everyone and other lots include original British Rail Western Region No Parking and Left Luggage enamel signs and other modern cast iron examples; an early 20th Century Maidstone, Murdoch, Murdoch & Co, London violin and bows; a quantity of photographic equipment; an Herbert Terry Anglepoise lamp, other table lamps and shades; a large vintage wooden schooner model; various boxes including a Chinese red lacquered box, an antique mahogany candle box, and offertory and deed boxes. In the Furniture section on offer is an Arts & Crafts circa 1900 mahogany stick stand with embossed copper panel; an 18th Century oak cricket table with brass banding; a hardwood stool in the form of an upstretched hand; an antique oak tea set storage box by Elkington & Co. Ltd; and a late 19th Century Chinese heavily carved hardwood torchere. Not forgetting the other usual sections of China & Glass, Outside Effects, Paintings & Pictures, Clocks & Barometers and Metalwork.

Viewing is on Tuesday 16th (10:00 – 19:00) and Wednesday 17th (10:00 – 17:00) June and the auction starts 10:00 daily.

Rendells May sale kicked off with Outside Effects and the sun surely helped people think about their gardens! Four teak folding garden chairs sold for £160; a garden table and two chairs sold for £110; with planters and pots selling for £35, £28, £22 and £20.

Chapel pews proved popular, with seven lots (each having two antique pine pews with narrow backrests) selling from £120 to £170. Lighting also sold well with six early 20th Century chapel pendant hanging lamps fetching £580; an early 20th Century Arts & Crafts Movement three branch copper chandelier selling for £90; an Arts & Crafts style oak standard lamp with lantern style shade selling for £65; and three Murano Glass table lamps (sold with two others) sold for £240. In the Furniture section a Victorian burr walnut and mahogany chest of four drawers sold for £320; an 18th Century two part oak housekeeper's cupboard made £200; a mid 20th Century Bruno Mathsson style swivel easy chair sold for £150; a mid 20th Century 'MacIntosh' teak extending dining table sold for £140; and three oak Globe Wernicke sectional barrister's bookcases each making £180.

Other notable lots included a Gandalfi large format camera fitted with a Wray Lustrar 6ins f5.6/f32 lens which sold for £260; a group of medals comprising The Cadet Forces Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct, Defence Medal, and British War Medal sold for £190; a large Indian lacquered wood spice box of 'melon' form (with two others) sold for £150; two mid 20th Century rotary telephones sold for £85; two Georgian silver milk jugs sold for £260; a pair of novelty silver cruets, each in the form of a seated frog sold for £170; an antique 15ct. rose gold watch chain selling for £1500; and an Omega Seamaster De Ville 750 (18ct.) gold cased gentleman's automatic wristwatch sold for £3300.

Rendells’ April sale included the bi-monthly sections of books, postcards, stamps and ephemera. One of the highlights from this section was a small autograph book containing a collection of mid 20th Century autographs including Keith Moon, John Entwhistle, Graham Hill, Spencer Davis, Ray Davies, Gene Pitney, Bill Wyman, Peter Snow which sold for £820. Another autograph book containing a collection of handwritten early 20th Century autographs including Douglas Fairbanks, George Bancroft, Greta Garbo, Loretta Young, Mary Pickford also sold for £100. A quantity of WWI and other postcards including military figures made a hammer price of £180 and 15 Bruce Bairnsfather WWI monochrome postcards, each depicting a titled satirical scene sold for £50.

Other results include a vintage MkII gun detection sight binocular formerly used on HMS Blake selling for £240; a pair of wrought iron garden obelisks sold for £170; a vintage oak and mixed wood haberdashery unit with two flights of nine drawers sold for £200; a set of four 19th Century Polish bentwood chairs with studded upholstered seats fetched £140; a 1.02m Victorian mahogany console table with carved frieze selling for £340; a Victorian pine farmhouse table sold for £460; a mid 20th Century G-Plan teak and mixed wood sideboard made £140; a Victorian pine chest sold for £180; an antique pine 'knockdown' double wardrobe sold for £240; an Art Deco limed oak triple wardrobe sold for £420; and an early 20th Century French kingwood herringbone veneered and ormulu mounted serpentine fronted vitrine sold for £460.

Miscellanous & Collectables included a pair of antique gentleman's Tom Hill brown leather boots and spurs selling for £110; two boxes containing a quantity of vintage linen and lace sold for £160; a quantity of Hardy fishing rods, a Hardy 'The Princess' reel and a Hardy 'Perfect' reel sold for £280; a vintage Japanese silk kimono sold for £620; a M.P.P. Mark VII micro technical 5X4 camera fitted with a 150mm f4.5 Schneider Kreuznach lens sold for £1150; A.H.G. Dunkerley, Royal Air Force: WWI medal group comprising British Air Force Cross, British Campaign Medal, British War Medal, British Victory Medal - with associated paperwork and correspondence – made £1450; and a Victorian button box containing a quantity of small decorated buttons sold for £60.
