I ask every single woman who comes to me the same question before we start, how much tax will you owe this year?

The most common answer I get back is three words.

Genuinely no idea 🤷🏼‍♀️

It comes from women who are booked out, women running businesses that are genuinely working, women hitting months they would have cried over three years ago.

It isn’t the answer of somebody who’s careless or somebody who isn’t trying.

Not one of us was taught this.
Not at school, not at college, not anywhere, and then we all quietly went away and decided we must be the only one who didn’t know.

So we get good at the thing we’re actually good at, and we let the money part happen to us, and every January we brace for a number we had no way of predicting.

That answer can stop being true and it doesn’t take you becoming a different kind of person to get there. It takes somebody sitting down and showing you, ONCE 🤍

If “genuinely no idea” is the honest answer for you too & you’re ready for that to stop being true?

She’d been VAT registered for eight months. She just didn’t know it! Cost? £20k due to HMRC. Now.

The £90,000 threshold isn’t the tax year. It’s not April to April, it’s a rolling twelve months, so it moves every single month, and almost nobody gets told that.

She was turning over ten, fifteen thousand a month, growing fast, doing brilliantly. It wasn’t until she sat down with her accountant the following May that she added it up properly and realised she’d gone over back in the September.

So she registers, backdated. And HMRC now want twenty percent of eight months of sales, sales she’d already invoiced, already banked, already spent, priced with no VAT in them because she had no idea she needed to. On those numbers that’s somewhere around £20k 😢

And you cannot go back to customers eight months later and ask them to hand over another twenty percent on work you finished last year. That money has to come out of her.

Then the accountancy bill to sort it out, backdated returns, the whole clean up, that’s hundreds at best and easily into the thousands.

This is why VAT breaks people. Not because they were careless, she wasn’t, she was smart and busy and growing. It’s because nobody ever teaches you this. Not in school, not in your qualification, nowhere.

That gap is expensive, and it’s the exact gap we close in The Wealth Academy. It’s open for enrolment NOW ✨

If you’re anywhere near that threshold and you’re ready to stop guessing where you stand >

My dad has dementia and Alzheimer’s and I’ve spent a lot of this year thinking about what that actually means for me, in my own life, running two businesses and raising my boy. And what got my attention was a number…

The Lancet Commission reckons up to 45% of dementia cases worldwide are linked to risk factors we CAN actually influence and the biggest window for influencing them sits in your 30’s & 40’s.

Some of it isn’t in our hands but 45% is a big enough slice that I decided to stop filing this under things to worry about later 🤍

After sharing on my stories about this a few of you asked me to share more of this, so here are three things I’ve built into my days.

Sleep, properly. Eight hours, protected, not the thing I trade away first when work gets loud. Your brain does its actual clearing out while you’re asleep and short sleep in midlife has been linked to higher dementia risk later on, so I’ve stopped treating rest like something I have to earn.

The sauna; as often as I can get in it.
A Finnish study followed men for twenty years and found the ones going four to seven times a week were far less likely to be diagnosed with dementia than the once a week group. Heat, blood flow and genuine nervous system calm are three things I’m happy to sign up for.

Creatine, magnesium and a B complex, taken daily.
Creatine isn’t only a gym thing, your brain runs on it too and the research on cognition is early but genuinely interesting, especially for women and especially when you’re running on less sleep than you’d like. (Hello mums 👋🏽)

None of this is a guarantee and I know that. But watching what my dad is going through, doing nothing was never going to sit right with me either.
If you’re a woman in business with a parent going through this you’ll understand, it’s a strange kind of heavy to carry alongside everything else 🤍

Why is the UK like this!? Get too tall and someone knocks you back down to the height of all the other poppies. Your pricing is the first place that shows up.

Don’t allow it to stay there girls. It’s about time we changed this narrative in the UK, I work with enough women to know we are ready for OUR turn in the Dream Era ✨

She was charging ÂŁ1,500 a month.
Not because that was the value. She’s technically brilliant. Builds funnels, sales pages, evergreen systems that actually convert. Her client is a seven figure business owner heading for eight.

ÂŁ1,500 a month.

She’s now on £4,000 to £5,000 a month with the same client. Same work. The client said yes without blinking, because she was always getting the value. Shes a successful business woman herself who wants to support another. She was always getting the value! She just wasn’t paying for it.

That’s £42,000 a year that was sat in the gap between what she was worth and what she was willing to say out loud.

No one teaches us about pricing or how to work through it. Beyond the practical calculations you can run with pricing there is identity work to do Queen.

In the US they call it the American dream. Here we’ve got tall poppy syndrome. Get too tall and someone knocks you back down to the height of all the other poppies. Your pricing is the first place that shows up.

Do you struggle with pricing?

Ask yourself how much you actually pay yourself and you’ll probably give me a confident number. Then if we looked at your real accounts, it would be dividends here, drawings there, money pulled out in dribs and drabs whenever something needed covering. You’re conscious of it at the time. But then you move past it pretty quickly. You’ll sort it properly one day. And the cycle repeats.

It means your real number is probably more than double what you tell me🤍

You’re making £10K, £15K, £20K+ months.
From the outside you’re smashing it.
From the inside you still can’t answer that question without guessing and you still feel a flicker of dread every time tax comes up. Plus you still quietly believe this is just the part of business you were never going to be good at.

Guess what Queen? It was never true!!

You were never taught this, that’s a completely different thing to being bad at it.

If you don’t actually know your real number yet & you are ready to move on this comment “WEALTH”

Most women running a business have three months of transactions sitting right there in their bank account and have never once looked at them properly, so the same pattern repeats… every single month with nothing ever flagging it 🚩

I’ve got a YOLO money personality, which means impulse spending is my default 🙋‍♀️ and as a qualified accountant, I still have to check myself before I wreck myself 👩🏼‍🎓

ADHD and admin have never got on, so I gave my AI three months of transactions and asked it one honest question…

The result? Well it came back with THREE opportunities in ten minutes 🤯

Comment “QUIZ” and I’ll send you my Money Personality Quiz for free right now.

If you don’t know about the Money Personality’s yet, there are three of them;

1) YOLO
2) Accumulator
3) Chameleon

Once you know which one you are, you can build around it and build WITH IT, instead of fighting yourself every single month.

This doesn’t replace your accountant, it just means you stop guessing about your own numbers.

I know you think you are bad at maths and I know money feels confusing and unsafe. BUT there is so much opportunity sitting in the data you keep ignoring! 🙏🏽

Comment “QUIZ” 💸 and it’ll land in your DMs, no charge, no waiting.

Ps it takes two minutes and it tells you how your money personality actually shows up in your business, which is the bit no one has ever named for you ✨

I want to talk about this because I’ve worked with over a thousand women now and I’ve never once met a woman who was bad with money. What I meet is women whose brains made a very sensible call years ago, that the information was going to hurt, and that not having it was safer than having it.

That’s protection!! And it works… right up until the point it costs you.

Because money keeps moving while you’re not watching. The subscription you forgot about, the price you set three years ago and never touched, the tax you’ve been guessing at since you started. None of that pauses politely while you get your head together.

The first time I properly looked at three women’s numbers, before any of them had done a single lesson with me, there was over £35,000 sitting there between them, and not one of them had done anything wrong. Nobody had ever just sat down and looked with them.

If you’re reading this with your stomach doing something, that’s your answer 🤍

You already know roughly what the statement is going to say, so you don’t open it and then a week goes by, then a month, and eventually the not-looking starts to feel like something that’s just true about you rather than a decision you made once on a hard day.

I want to talk about this because I’ve worked with over a thousand women now (mental) and I’ve never once met a woman who was bad with money. What I meet is women whose brains made a very sensible call years ago, that the information was going to hurt, and so not having it was safer than having it.

That’s protection! Right? And it works right up until the point it costs you.

Once it starts costing though it doesn’t stop. THATS the problem. Because money keeps moving while you’re not watching. The subscription you forgot about, the price you set three years ago and never touched, the tax you’ve been guessing at since you started. None of that pauses politely while you get your s**t together.

The first time I properly looked at three women’s numbers, before any of them had done a single lesson with me, there was over £35,000 sitting there between them. Not one of them had done anything wrong.

Nobody had ever just sat down and looked with them, that’s the whole story.

£90k is the VAT threshold and it’s measured across any rolling twelve months; NOT your tax year. This means you can quietly cross it in October and not find out until the following March when your accountant flags it at year end. As a qualified accountant in the industry over 20 years, I can tell you it happens WAY more often than you’d think.

By then you’re looking at backdated VAT on sales where the money is long gone, possible penalties, and a very awkward round of messages to every client about a price rise you never planned for, it’s carnage 💸

I know what you’re thinking, nobody ever taught you this, and you’re right, nobody did. Not at school, not at college, not in a single business course you’ve paid good money for.

That financial knowledge gap isn’t a nice to have, it’s the difference between a nasty shock and a decision you made on purpose. It’s essential.

It isn’t your accountant’s job to watch your monthly sales figures, that one belongs to you, and honestly that’s the good news, because the moment you’re the one tracking it, the fear starts to go.

You can’t be blindsided by something you’re already looking at, and an HMRC letter stops being panic and becomes something you saw coming.

Comment “CLARITY” if you want to avoid TAX SHOCK costing you thousands in your business and I’ll personally voice note you with what to do first ✨
