One of the biggest hidden costs in a nursery isn't agency spend.
It isn't recruitment fees.
It's having managers who spend more time in ratio than they do managing.
When a nursery is short staffed, managers often step in to cover rooms.
At first, this feels like the right thing to do.
But over time, something happens.
Recruitment gets pushed back.
Supervisions get delayed.
Staff development slows down.
Team issues go unresolved.
Retention suffers.
And before long, the nursery finds itself recruiting again.
The irony is that many staffing problems aren't caused by recruitment alone.
They're caused by managers being unable to focus on the activities that actually improve attraction and retention.
How much time do your managers spend in ratio each week, and what impact does it have on the setting?
