ONCE upon a time, SO m
any years ago, as a small child, I would sit beside my mum and watch her with wonder as she peddled away on the old singer sewing machine, making my little dresses, with the promise that one day when I was a little older, she would teach me how to use this machine, but until my legs were long enough to reach the peddle, I could only watch.. Looking back now, these were some of the most precious times I spent with mum, talking about so many things, but most of all, I remember her passion for fabrics and the look of pride on her face when she had finished another garment. Mum kept her promise and sat patiently beside me, teaching me how to use that big old sewing machine, it was no easy task for her, I can still hear her saying to me countless times that if there was a wrong way to do it, I would find it, I did get there in the end, often the long way round, but still I did it. Years went by and mum continued to make clothes and indeed made my children some of their clothes, indeed to this day at the age of 94 she still sits and crochets, but I never really found the time to sew myself, I’m sure I must have wanted to, but life got in the way. Which brings me to why and how Nannies little dreamers came about, sadly my mum who had always been so independent, went into care about nearly four years ago, it was while sorting out her home, I found myself sat looking at her more modern sewing machine and a box full of haberdashery, I remembered the times she has encouraged me be creative as a child and knew that she would want me to make use of them. I soon discovered that sewing was VERY therapeutic, but mostly I found it comforting, feeling close to mum while sewing, perhaps it’s those childhood memories or just that I feel I am somehow keeping her skills alive, Like her, I have a love of fabric and feel that same pride when I see my little grandchildren wearing something I have made them. Now there is another part of this story that is very important, it’s all about a wonderful seven year old little girl called Claudia Burkill, who was diagnosed with Metastatic PineoBlastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain tumour in 2011, I have followed “Claudia’s Cause” her page on Facebook, which was set up by her parents, It was while I was looking at this page, that I saw a beautiful photo of Claudia and her two sisters Esme and Abigale in matching pillowcase dresses, I was inspired, I set about making my granddaughter some dresses, one dress became many, and so Nannies Little Dreamers was born, my very own dream come true. I would like to say thank you to the most important people in my life, My Family who believe in me, my friends who supported me to all my wonderful customers and to you sweet Claudia in your memory for making me believe that anything is possible.
