🔥 Fire Door Safety Tip

Are your fire doors fitted with the correct key apertures?

Fire doors should be fitted with appropriate, properly backed key apertures to help maintain the door’s intended fire performance.

Small details such as door hardware and fittings can have an important role in fire door safety.

Regular inspection and maintenance can help identify issues before they become a problem.

Your safety, is our priority.

🔥 Fire Safety Reminder: Make Your Fire Exit Signs Clear

Fire exit signage plays an important role in helping people find their way to safety during an emergency.

It’s not enough to simply have a fire exit sign — the sign needs to be positioned correctly and clearly visible from the direction of travel.

✅ Ensure fire exit signs are clearly visible
✅ Use the appropriate directional arrow
✅ Position signs at suitable angles where changes in direction occur
✅ Make sure escape routes remain clear and unobstructed
✅ Regularly check that signage remains in good condition

Clear signage can make a difference when every second counts.

At J.S.O Fire Safety Consultants, we can help identify issues with fire safety arrangements and provide professional advice to help keep your premises compliant and, most importantly, safe

🚪 Keep Fire Exits Clear 🚪

A fire exit is only effective if people can use it.

Storing bins, waste or other items in front of escape doors can delay evacuation when every second counts. Fire escape routes and final exits should always be kept clear, unobstructed and immediately available for use.

Clear exits save lives

🔥 Fire Stopping Matters 🔥

This is a common issue we come across during fire risk assessments.

Simply filling a gap around cables with foam does not mean the pe*******on has been correctly fire-stopped. Fire stopping should be a tested and certified system that maintains the fire resistance of the wall or floor.

Poor or unverified fire stopping can allow fire and smoke to spread quickly, reducing the effectiveness of the building's compartmentation.

✅ Don't assume it's compliant because the hole has been filled. Always ensure fire stopping is properly installed and can be verified.

Working on heritage buildings requires a different approach to fire safety.

This week we're carrying out a fire strategy assessment for a Grade II listed property being converted into short-term holiday accommodation. Our assessment considers the building as a whole, including means of escape, fire alarm provision, emergency lighting, compartmentation, occupancy and management arrangements to develop a practical, risk-based fire safety strategy.

Heritage buildings often present unique challenges where preserving historic fabric must be carefully balanced with achieving an appropriate level of fire safety. A proportionate, evidence-based fire strategy can help identify practical solutions while recognising the constraints of listed buildings.

Every historic building is different, and that's why a holistic fire strategy is often the most effective way to support both fire safety and conservation objectives.

🚪 Hidden Damage Doesn’t Mean Safe

This fire door may look acceptable at first glance, but a closer inspection tells a different story.

In this case, it appears that a previous lock has been removed and the opening has simply been covered over, rather than being repaired using an appropriate fire-rated method. While this may improve the appearance, it can compromise the door’s ability to perform in the event of a fire.

Fire doors are carefully tested systems, and even seemingly minor alterations can affect their fire resistance.

🔍 Regular fire door inspections can identify:

* Poor or incorrect repairs
* Unauthorised alterations
* Missing or damaged fire door components
* Issues that could compromise life safety

Don’t assume a fire door is compliant just because it looks okay from a distance.

At J.S.O Fire Safety Consultants, our qualified surveyors carry out comprehensive fire door inspections to help ensure your building remains safe and compliant.

Think your fire doors are doing their job?

These photos tell a different story.

Fire doors are there to protect lives, but damaged hinges, frames, locks and excessive wear can stop them from performing as intended when they’re needed most.

Regular inspections and timely remedial works help keep buildings compliant and, more importantly, keep occupants safe.

🔥 LPG Cylinder Safety – Are Your Gas Cylinders Stored Correctly?

LPG cylinders can present a significant fire and explosion risk if they are not stored and managed correctly.

When LPG cylinders are in use, it’s important to ensure they are:

✅ Secured to prevent them from falling over (where appropriate).
✅ Stored in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
✅ Kept away from ignition sources and combustible materials.
✅ Clearly identified with suitable warning signage.
✅ Regularly inspected for signs of damage, corrosion, or leaks.
✅ Included within your Fire Risk Assessment and routine safety inspections.

Taking simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of fire and help protect your staff, visitors and property.

At J.S.O Fire Safety Consultants, we provide expert Fire Risk Assessments, fire safety advice and compliance support to help businesses meet their legal responsibilities.

Hidden fire risks aren’t always behind closed doors.

During a recent compartmentation survey, we identified an open service area in the main reception where cables and pipework had been left exposed.

While it may appear harmless, openings like these can allow fire and smoke to spread much more quickly if they pass through fire-resisting compartments, reducing the effectiveness of a building’s passive fire protection.

These types of issues can often go unnoticed during day-to-day use, which is why regular compartmentation surveys are so important particularly after refurbishment works, maintenance, or new service installations.

Identifying potential breaches early helps ensure your building remains compliant and, most importantly, helps protect the people who use it.

If you’re unsure whether your building’s compartmentation has ever been inspected, we’d be happy to help.

📞 Contact J.S.O Fire Safety Consultants to discuss how a compartmentation survey can support your fire safety strategy.
