🍇 Harvest is on the horizon at Wellhayes Vineyard

Our full focus is now on one of the key dates in the vineyard calendar: HARVEST

Keeping the vines under control and disease-free this year has proved something of a challenge, and this year we have faced a new problem: wasps! The summer heat has made it simply too hot to work in the vineyard during the middle of the day, but there is a very welcome compensation as we are potentially looking at one of our best crops yet.

Not only are the yields looking promising, but, crucially, so is the quality. The consistent hot weather has produced wonderfully clean grapes with good sugar levels, leaving us increasingly optimistic about this year's crop.

All of which means we could be looking at a very early harvest by Wellhayes standards. Indeed, it is a welcome change this year to be deciding when to harvest based on the optimum balance of sugar and acidity in the grapes for sparkling wine, rather than too often how ripe can we get the grapes before the weather closes in. And this year it is looking like we may actually be harvesting the Chardonnay before the Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which would be a first for us.

As ever, we'd love to welcome volunteers to help us bring the grapes in. We expect the harvest to take two main days, starting at 9.30am and finishing by early afternoon, followed by a well-earned lunch provided by us.

🗓️ We are currently targeting the beginning of the week of 21st September and Saturday 26th as the two main harvest days

But, as anyone who has helped us before will know, these dates are very much subject to change. Weather, grape ripeness and disease pressure will all have a say in when we finally pick.

So, if you'd be interested in helping with this year's harvest, please register your interest and we'll keep you updated as the plans develop.
🍷 Please email [email protected] to get on the list.

We'd love to see some familiar faces, and some new ones, amongst the vines this year! 🍇

A very enjoyable evening at Wellhayes Vineyard, tasting our 2022 vintage! 🍾

As you’ll see from the photos, we’ve been tasting through the wine and working out exactly how much dosage (sugar) to add. It’s one of those jobs that sounds very technical, but is actually a rather enjoyable excuse to taste wine repeatedly and debate the finer points! 🍇🥂

We also tasted the Rosé from the 2023 vintage, and we’re delighted with how it’s coming along. So much so that we’ve decided we’ll be releasing it next year too. That will make it our first ever Rosé!

Both wines are tasting really well and, with a little more time, should be looking very presentable indeed when we finally release them in May next year.

There’s still plenty to do between now and then, but it’s always exciting when you get these little glimpses of what’s to come 🍾

Our task this week? Putting up the nets! 🍇🕸️

The early ripening grapes are coming along beautifully, but unfortunately, the birds think they’re looking pretty delicious too 🐦

As we head towards harvest in about a month’s time, we introduce various measures around the vineyard to try and protect the grapes and give them the best chance of making it safely to harvest.

The nets are going up over the early ripening grapes to keep the birds at bay. And there’s another challenge too... the whole vineyard is an early ripener this year! We simply can’t net the whole thing, so we’re having to be strategic about which areas get priority.

You might also spot bottles hanging at the ends of the rows. These are filled with a tempting mixture designed to divert wasps away from the grapes, because we need to outsmart both birds and wasps at this stage of the season! 🐝🍇

📷 This photo gives a lovely perspective on just how well the vines are doing this year.

Taken from the top of the adjoining hill, the vineyard really does look like a green oasis surrounded by fields that have turned golden and parched in the summer sun.

We don’t irrigate the vines at all, so it’s a great illustration of just how deep their roots can go. They’ve found the moisture they need beneath the ground and, judging by how green and healthy they look, they’re clearly enjoying the sunshine! 🌱

It’s quite something to see the contrast, while much of the surrounding countryside is struggling with the dry conditions, the vines seem to be thriving.

🍇🍇 A little update from the vineyard

Our Pinot Noir grapes have just started to turn red, a stage known as veraison. It’s always an exciting moment to see, as the grapes change colour, soften and begin their final journey towards ripeness.

Traditionally, harvest comes around 40 days after veraison, which puts us at roughly the third week of September this year. That feels very early indeed!

After such an exceptionally sunny summer, the vines are certainly making the most of it

We’ll be keeping a close eye on them over the coming weeks. It’s amazing how quickly things can change at this time of year! ⏰

This year's vines have been nothing short of extraordinary 🌿🍇

The warmth and sunshine has produced incredible growth across the vineyard. While it's wonderful to see the vines looking so healthy and vigorous, it also means there's been a huge amount of work to ensure they grow in a managed way to keep the disease pressure at bay.

These photos give you an idea of just how much growth we've had, and also show the result of hours spent managing the canopy, carefully removing leaves and shoots to improve airflow, allow sunlight to reach the fruit, and help the grapes ripen evenly.

The heat this summer has made the work particularly challenging, so we've adopted something of a continental timetable, with 5am starts to make the most of the cooler hours.

The reward? So far, the grapes are looking exceptionally promising, and all this careful canopy management plays a vital role in helping them reach their full potential.

Fingers crossed for the rest of the season, harvest is already looking like an exciting prospect!

🍷 Bottling has begun! 🍷

We're excited to say we've officially started bottling our 2025 vintage, and first up is our rosé! 🌸

This is only the second time we've produced a rosé here at Wellhayes Vineyard, the first being back in 2023, so it's always a special moment to see it making its way into bottles.

These photos show the bottling process in action... or perhaps more accurately, the aftermath! It's all part of turning months of hard work in the vineyard into the bottles for you to enjoy.

We will have to wait until 2030 to see what it tastes like. Here's to another exciting step in the journey from vine to wine! 🍇🍷

We're delighted to have featured in Oz & Tom's English Wine Heroes 2026! 🍾
A huge thank you to Oz Clarke and Tom Surgey for including our Wellhayes Sparkling Wine 2020 in their tasting.

Their notes perfectly capture what we love about this vintage:
"Immediately inviting, ripe orchard fruits with fleshy apple, the crunch of an apple core and a white peach juicy tingle. Freshly baked brown bread and a subtle oregano leaf aromatic quality."

We're incredibly proud to see our sparkling wine showcased alongside so many fantastic English wines.

Take a look through the photos from the tasting... can you spot our Wellhayes bottles? 👀🍾
