For Small Business Week, I want to highlight some of the small businesses I work with and know well.

First up is Emma Cromarty and ECHR.

Emma supports businesses with HR, giving employers clear, practical guidance when they are dealing with people issues, policies, compliance, contracts and all the situations that can quickly become difficult if they are not handled properly.

What I love about Emma is the way she combines proper HR expertise with a very grounded understanding of how small businesses actually work. It is not about making things more complicated. It is about helping employers do things properly, fairly and with confidence.

Small businesses need people around them who bring Care, Reliability and Expertise when the pressure is on.

Emma is one of those people.

If you run a business and know your HR needs more structure, she is worth knowing.

Small businesses grow through trust, relationships and consistency. Those are the same principles that shape how we work at Connxess.

Care, Reliability, Diligence, Expertise and Collaboration are not just internal values for us. They influence how we support clients, how we communicate and how we help small business owners feel more organised behind the scenes.

There is one week to go until UK Small Business Week 2026.

It is a chance to celebrate the independent businesses that bring value, choice and personality to our local communities.

At Connxess, we support small businesses behind the scenes with practical back office support, admin, CRM, customer follow-up, documentation and marketing support.

We know that growth is not just about big wins. It is often built through consistent delivery, clear communication and reliable support.

That is why we are proud to be part of this campaign.

Connxess is proud to be taking part in UK Small Business Week 2026.

From 1st–7th June, the campaign celebrates the small businesses that support local communities, create jobs, serve customers and keep the UK economy moving.

We work with small business owners every day, so we know how much happens behind the scenes. Admin, follow-up, systems, marketing, customer communication and all the work that helps a business run properly.

For us, this week links closely with our values of Care, Reliability, Diligence, Expertise and Collaboration.

Small businesses deserve to be seen, supported and celebrated.

A lot of trades businesses are flat out, but still feel like they are constantly catching up.

Not because the work is not there, but because the admin, communication and follow up around the work can pile up fast.

When those parts are more organised, the business feels easier to stay on top of and customers usually get a better experience too.

If the paperwork and follow up are taking more effort than they should, it may be worth looking at how that side could run more smoothly.

Manufacturing businesses often have a lot moving at once, and not all of the pressure sits on the shop floor.

Quite often, some of the biggest frustrations are in the admin, communication and follow up that happen behind the scenes.

When those parts are more organised and consistent, the whole business tends to feel easier to manage.

If things feel slower or messier behind the scenes than they should, it may be time to review the back office side properly.

A lot of business processes still rely on somebody remembering what needs to happen next.

That works until things get busy.

Automation can help take some of that pressure away by making sure the right next step happens more consistently, whether that is a follow up, a confirmation, a reminder or an internal task.

It is not about making the business feel robotic. It is about making it easier to stay on top of things.

If your processes still rely too heavily on memory, there may be a better way to set things up.

AI does not need to be all or nothing.

For a lot of small businesses, the useful question is not “How do we use AI everywhere?”

It is “Where could this save time without making things worse?”

Sometimes it can help with first drafts, summaries, admin tasks or process support. Sometimes it is not the right fit at all.

The key is using it in a practical, sensible way that supports the business rather than creating more noise.

If you are trying to work out where AI is useful and where it is not, start with the tasks that repeat most often.

A CRM is meant to help you stay on top of leads, follow ups and customer information.

But if it is not set up properly, or nobody is really using it consistently, it can end up feeling like just another thing to maintain.

That is why the real value is not just having a system. It is having one that actually works for the business you run.

When it is clear, simple and used properly, it can save a lot of time and prevent a lot of missed opportunities.

If your CRM feels clunky or underused, it may be time to look at what is getting in the way.

A lot of businesses do not struggle because they have no marketing ideas.

They struggle because there is no time or headspace to turn those ideas into something consistent.

That is often where support makes the real difference.

Not flashy marketing. Not forcing content for the sake of it. Just helping things get planned, written and delivered in a way that feels manageable and steady.

If your marketing feels more stop start than it should, it may be worth looking at what support would help keep it moving.
