Babich Wines New Zealand

Babich Wines New Zealand Every bottle of Babich wine carries character shaped by passion, purpose, and over 100 years and three generations of family winemaking history.

Babich Wines is an internationally renowned, family-owned New Zealand winemaker. Since 1916, every decision, action, challenge and triumph from generations of family winemaking has shaped who we are and what we stand for today. It’s in how we tend our vines, craft our wines, and approach life: with passion, purpose, and a healthy disregard for doing things the way they’ve always been done. From ou

r diverse vineyards to your table, our wines offer a connection to New Zealand, the place we’ve called home for over a century. Because lasting character, like great wine, isn’t about following a recipe. It develops through time. Through taking chances. Through learning what rules to break, and which ones really matter. People thought our founder Josip Babich was crazy back in 1912, planting vines in remote New Zealand, then making wine the hard way. But vision, grit and ingenuity have always run deep here. Three generations later, they still do. So when you choose Babich, you’re not just tasting wine. You’re experiencing character that runs as deep as our roots in New Zealand soil. Built over the past 100 years, and ready for the next 100.

Before there were vineyards, there were gumfields.

Between 1904 and 1910, five Babich brothers made the long journey from Dalmatia (modern-day Croatia) to New Zealand. They arrived one by one, working the kauri gumfields of Northland, where the days were long, the work was hard, and every pound earned mattered.

What began as a search for opportunity slowly became something more. The brothers built a life here, helped each other get established, and laid the foundations for what would eventually become Babich Wines.

More than 110 years later, the story continues. And it all started with five brothers willing to take a chance on a new country.

Our story spans more than 110 years, but at its heart it's still a story about family, hard work, and a willingness to try something different.

David Babich sat down with New Zealand Winegrowers to reflect on where we've come from, what we've learned along the way, and what continues to drive us today.

Tony Smith is your classic Kiwi bloke. If someone overseas asked what one looked like, we’d probably just point them toward Hawke’s Bay and hope Tony was nearby.

Father, grandfather, husband, mate… and the man steering the viticultural ship for Babich in Hawke’s Bay.

One day it’s budgets and meetings. The next it’s muddy pipe repairs in the middle of a vineyard. Tony reckons the job’s a bit like sailing. Constantly adjusting to the conditions and trying to keep things pointed smoothly toward harvest.

He’s not big on wet boots or unnecessary complications. But give him a vineyard to fine-tune, a decent crew around him, and maybe the chance to sneak off fishing afterwards, and he’s right where he wants to be.

Our Babich Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir recently found themselves in very good company 🍷🍝

Poured at Trattoria Delmaine, a pop-up at Cazador Restaurant & Delicatessen celebrating the launch of Delmaine Fine Foods' new ready-to-make pasta range, they spent the evening alongside generous plates of Italian-inspired food, good conversation, and tables full of people enjoying both.

Cowslip Valley sits on a gentle rise in Marlborough’s Waihopai Valley, with gravelly soils that suit Pinot Noir and aromatic whites particularly well.

Despite what the steep hill at the back of the vineyard might suggest, the name has nothing to do with cows slipping over.

Instead, it's named after the cowslip: a small yellow flower brought to New Zealand by early settlers. It's known for thriving in temperate climates and for a fragrance often likened to apricot and springtime.

A slightly better origin story than clumsy cattle, if you ask us.

From a small town in Maryland to her fourth vintage at Babich, Alina’s wine journey has travelled a fair few kilometres… though apparently good wine was never too far away. Back home in Middletown, there’s a local “winery” where the wines are made in a basement. Not exactly Napa, but a solid starting point.

Ten years into the New Zealand wine industry, Alina found plenty of reasons to stay. The wine, the people, and a way of life that felt very different to home. Not to mention her Kiwi husband, too.

These days, as one of our Cellar Hands in Auckland, she brings a warm personality, a strong opinion or two, and absolutely no fear of hard work. Pump-overs, long shifts, heavy lifting… Alina’s usually halfway through the job before anyone else has finished talking about it.

Fresh oysters, Babich Black Label Sauvignon Blanc, and one very generous compliment from Chef Choi Hyun-seok.

In WINEIN’s episode exploring New Zealand wine and K-food, Chef Choi and Sommelier Jo Nae Jin paired our Black Label Sauv with oysters. Chef Choi said it matched better than any Chablis could.

We’ll try not let it go to our heads.

Thanks to and for the feature. Very cool to see our wines finding fans in South Korea and across Asia.

Enjoy Babich responsibly.

Did you know our Irongate Chardonnay is forty?!

The labels have changed a bit since 1985, but the wine, and the story behind it, have stayed pretty true to their roots.

What started as a late-night experiment has become one of the wines we’re most proud to pour.

Grown in the rugged Gimblett Gravels, Irongate’s always been a smooth operator. A generous one too. Full-bodied, ripe stone fruits and that fruit and nut character Chardonnay fanatics tend to get a little nostalgic about.

Happy World Chardonnay Day!

Enjoy Babich responsibly.

Cheers to our Babich Marlborough Pinot Gris this International Pinot Gris Day.

Fruity, but with a backbone. Expect floral aromas and juicy notes of fresh apple, pear and nectarine.

It’s a natural with food too. Fish and chips, glazed ham, roast cauliflower… take your pick.

Often overlooked next to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris quietly delivers with texture, balance, and plenty of character.

Enjoy Babich responsibly.

Marlborough’s Waihopai Valley is a place of contrast. Cold nights, warm days and free-draining soils that keep the vines healthy and happy.

Tucked into this landscape is our Echelon Valley Vineyard.

Not far from the valley’s well-known satellite station, it’s a site that’s quietly producing something special. Many of the blocks even carry their own code names... a small nod to the place it's in.

The focus, though, is simple. Growing high-quality fruit destined for some of our premium Reserve wines.
