Every bottle of Babich wine carries character shaped by passion, purpose, and over 100 years and three generations of family winemaking history.

Babich Wines is an internationally renowned, family-owned New Zealand winemaker. Since 1916, every decision, action, challenge and triumph from generations of family winemaking has shaped who we are and what we stand for today. It’s in how we tend our vines, craft our wines, and approach life: with passion, purpose, and a healthy disregard for doing things the way they’ve always been done. From our diverse vineyards to your table, our wines offer a connection to New Zealand, the place we’ve called home for over a century. Because lasting character, like great wine, isn’t about following a recipe. It develops through time. Through taking chances. Through learning what rules to break, and which ones really matter. People thought our founder Josip Babich was crazy back in 1912, planting vines in remote New Zealand, then making wine the hard way. But vision, grit and ingenuity have always run deep here. Three generations later, they still do. So when you choose Babich, you’re not just tasting wine. You’re experiencing character that runs as deep as our roots in New Zealand soil. Built over the past 100 years, and ready for the next 100.

A few behind-the-scenes moments from Line of Cruisers.

There seems to be a quiet Babich fondness for old cars with character. André has his Super Beetle. David has this: yellow, boxy, practical, and not especially concerned with modern comforts.

The family’s Landcruiser habit began when an old Morris proved slightly underqualified for hunting gear, dogs, and the New Zealand bush. So, they moved to something tougher.

Naturally, it stuck.

This one may do a little less heavy lifting than the Landcruisers before it, but it still carries plenty of family history - along with David, his Spoodle Roko, and the odd reminder that some things earn their place by simply refusing to quit.

When Peter Babich joined the family business in 1949, New Zealand w**e was still finding its way to the people who would eventually come to love it.

Peter was part of the generation that helped move it forward.

Less “warriors across the table”, as he put it, and more working together.

He spent 38 years in w**e industry politics, helping build a more cooperative, ambitious industry. Which is a long time to sit in meetings. A very long time.

But for Peter, it mattered. The prize was bigger than one w**ery. It was about proving New Zealand w**e had a place, at home and beyond.

As he said: “Whatever country you go to, they are not waiting for you to turn up.”

So, you had to turn up properly.

And Peter did.

The next vintage is arriving with the right kind of attention.

James Suckling has awarded our Babich Irongate Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2025 90 points.

Forty vintages in, Irongate Chardonnay is still earning its place.

Grown at our flagship Irongate Vineyard in Gimblett Gravels, this limited release carries plenty of history, but it’s not here to lean on the past.

Peach, cashew, apple and brioche. Rich, focused and built to last, with a fine line of acidity keeping everything in check.

Auckland W**emaker Craig Hoskin has been crafting w**e with Babich for nearly two decades, on and off. Which, around here, counts as both experience and excellent decision-making.

He was once known for cycling a 60km round trip to work and starting at the crack of dawn. These days, the lycra has been retired in favour of more gentlemanly hours.

Craig keeps the Auckland w**ery moving: checking in with the team, sorting the day’s surprises, planning w**e flows, blending, and making sure the good stuff gets where it needs to go.

Calm hands, a good head, and no shortage of opinions.

A few behind-the-scenes moments from Making W**e in Secret.

The story begins with Joe Babich, three barrels, and a quiet belief that he was onto something.

That “something” became Irongate Chardonnay. And this year, it reached its 40th vintage.

Even forty years later, it’s still proving him right.

Now, with the 2025 vintage newly released, one of the most iconic bottles in our portfolio is entering its next chapter, still shaped by that same unconventional spirit.

Some secrets age rather well. Find out more at the link below 🍇

Our Headwaters Vineyard is a pretty special patch of Marlborough. And not just because it’s where we grow the grapes for our Family Estates range of organic w**es.

As our Marlborough Area Viticulturist David Bullivant puts it, growing grapes organically is hugely rewarding, but there’s not much room for error.

It takes a bit of extra work, a lot of attention and some clever thinking about what’s happening beneath our feet.

Swipe through to get amongst the weeds with us. 🌱

It’s Organic W**e Week, so we’re heading into the vineyard with our Marlborough Area Viticulturist David Bullivant.

David’s a big believer in biodiversity and letting a little wildness into the vineyard. Just not at the expense of the vines... if only the vines and wildflowers could learn to share the water and soil.

English summers are better with Babich. Especially when there’s fresh Dorset seafood involved.

For our annual Babich on the Beach with Berkmann W**e Cellars, we brought together 12 trade partners and prospective customers from bars and restaurants across the South of England for a day in Mudeford.

The idea is simple: thank those who already support Babich and give some new faces the chance to get to know us. Away from busy venues and the usual sales meeting, there’s time to taste more of the range, talk w**e and get to know Babich a little better.

There was a Babich masterclass and tasting, locally caught seafood, a lesson from the people who fish the Dorset coast, and a ferry ride across to the beach for a picnic with a few more Babich w**es in tow.

A tough day at the office, but somebody had to do it.

Pinot Noir tends to inspire strong opinions among w**emakers.

Ask Senior W**emaker Adam Hazeldine and he’ll describe it in three words: personality, charm and tension. Ask Auckland W**emaker Craig Hoskin and you’ll get a different answer: seductive, sophisticated and sensitive.

Perhaps that’s fitting. Pinot Noir has always been a w**e that reveals something different to everyone who spends time with it.

Our Babich Marlborough Pinot Noir 2024 is bright and expressive today, showing cherry fruit, red berries and a gentle thread of spice. Beneath that generosity sit the structure and balance, too. W**e Enthusiast recently gave it 91 points and a Best Buy. Not a bad endorsement for a varietal that inspires so many opinions.

Joe Babich had a fairly straightforward approach to w**emaking: respect what works, but never be afraid to try something different.

In the 1980s, that meant looking to French w**emaking techniques for inspiration and secretly experimenting with three barrels of Chardonnay after hours. The resulting w**e went on to win a gold medal and trophy – and shaped what would become our Irongate range.

Two decades later, that same curiosity took Joe to Marlborough, where he set out to learn about organic w**egrowing the best way he knew how: by doing it. That experiment grew into Headwaters Vineyard, which remains organically certified today.

Different decades, different ideas, same Joe.
