Joe Babich had a fairly straightforward approach to w**emaking: respect what works, but never be afraid to try something different.

In the 1980s, that meant looking to French w**emaking techniques for inspiration and secretly experimenting with three barrels of Chardonnay after hours. The resulting w**e went on to win a gold medal and trophy – and shaped what would become our Irongate range.

Two decades later, that same curiosity took Joe to Marlborough, where he set out to learn about organic w**egrowing the best way he knew how: by doing it. That experiment grew into Headwaters Vineyard, which remains organically certified today.

Different decades, different ideas, same Joe.

This 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle has been part of the Babich family story for quite some time. Although, technically, it’s been two Beetles.

Believe it or not, this duck-egg blue beauty is a bit of a Frankenstein – one Beetle that had been in the family for decades, and an identical model sourced to help bring it back to life.

André Babich spent the better part of a decade restoring it, piece by piece, with his father Joe Babich. Why put quite that much time into an old VW?

For International Cabernet Day, we’re opening the Babich Irongate Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Merlot Franc, a w**e that’s been part of the family story since 1987.

Cabernet Sauvignon has a fairly tidy origin story, as grapes go. In the 1990s, DNA testing confirmed what its name had been quietly hinting at all along: Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc are its parents.

A red grape and a white grape, both from Bordeaux. W**e has always had a way of keeping families interesting.

For our Irongate red blend, Cabernet brings the backbone. Merlot brings the charm. Franc brings the lift. Hawke’s Bay brings the warmth. And James Suckling brings the kudos, giving the 2018 vintage 92 points, which is a rather nice thing to bring to the table too.

Nearly forty years on, it still has plenty to say. And we’d wager it’ll be here for the next forty, and the forty after that too.

Seventeen years is a fairly long way to take the scenic route back to Babich.

Eunsuk first joined us after studying Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University. Babich became her first permanent job in New Zealand, as well as the place she met her husband, Alan. A move to Seoul followed for two years. It turned out two w**emakers could only stay away from w**emaking for so long, so they came back to New Zealand, but it took Eunsuk another few years to come back to us.

These days, Eunsuk is back in the Babich lab, providing the precise analysis our w**emakers rely on. Though “lab work” can also involve climbing a three-storey tank in a safety harness, so a decent head for heights comes in handy too.

After more than 20 years working in w**ery labs, her approach to w**e remains wonderfully uncomplicated: “You don’t need to be an expert. If you like the taste, drink more of it. If you don’t, try a different bottle.”

Seventeen years away and still talking sense.

Who doesn't love a beach day? This one was with rubbish bags rather than beach bags.

The Andrew Peller team recently swapped the office for a day at Spanish Banks and Locarno Beach in Vancouver, spending the day clearing litter from the shoreline in support of Surfrider Foundation.

As the team helping take Babich into the Canadian summer, it’s pretty great to see them looking after their own patch of coastline while they’re at it.

Babich has supported Surfrider Foundation and the work they do to protect our oceans, waves and beaches for a number of years. Because looking after the places we enjoy is something worth getting behind.

Good people, doing good things. We’re proud to have them in our corner.

Our W**emakers’ Reserve Sauvignon Blanc began with a simple question: what else could Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc do?

The answer involved perfectly ripe fruit from some of our favourite vineyard blocks, wild fermentation, barrel fermentation, and a fairly light touch in the w**ery.

Which may sound slightly ironic for something called W**emakers’ Reserve.

Maybe that’s the point. Sometimes the best w**emaking is knowing when to stay reserved.

James Suckling awarded our 2024 vintage 91 points, which is a nice bit of encouragement for staying out of the w**e’s way.

After a few cameos here and there, it’s about time Rosie had a post of her own.

Rosie is a Huntaway x Labrador, and Marlborough Area Viticulturist David Bullivant’s loyal vineyard companion.

Those who’ve met her will know she takes vineyard life seriously. Very seriously. There are puddles to assess, grape rows to patrol, streams to inspect, and humans to keep moving in roughly the right direction.

Come harvest, Rosie is never far from the action. She’s been known to offer her thoughts on grape flavours and perfect pick timing and show the Marlborough harvest team how to sneak in a mid-shift nap. Though her honorary viticulture degree is still pending.

Part companion, part morale officer, part grape-whisperer.

Around here, Rosie is 100% indispensable.

Named after Iva Babich, mother of our founder Josip Babich, IVA carries a piece of family history and reflects more than 15 years of organic w**emaking at Babich.

Senior W**emaker Adam Hazeldine describes IVA as a more serious take on Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

This is Irongate Vineyard, in the heart of Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay.

Long before vines, this land was an ancient riverbed. Later, its stony ground was dug up to build roads. Part of the wider area even had a stint as a drag strip.

Irongate Vineyard takes its name from the aquifer beneath the Gimblett Gravels, another reminder of the river that helped shape this land long before we arrived.

Today, those ancient stones help bring concentration, structure and character to w**es like our Babich Irongate Chardonnay and Babich Irongate Cabernet Merlot Franc.

Not bad for a former riverbed.
