Robyn Young HR

Robyn Young HR We provide down to earth & reliable HR | People | Recruitment support to businesses across NZ. Most of our clients operate businesses with 20 to 100 employees.

We work with businesses (mainly small to medium) to provide HR advice and support. Our clients work with us across a wide range of HR services - employment agreements, employee issues, policies, restructuring, recruitment, organisation and role design, remuneration, performance and health and safety. They usually have someone ‘doing payroll and contracts’ but the business can’t afford to employ a full time HR person. These clients want to improve something about the way they manage their people their application of HR and that is where we come in. Our approach is different because we focus on coaching business owners and managers how to improve their own HR capability (much like having an HR professional working for you). After working with us you’ll be able to do more on your own. We want businesses to get the most out of their people whether we’re there with you or not. If employees are engaged and motivated, customer service levels increase, as does the bottom line. We offer some packaged services but other specialised work is based on an hourly rate. Our pricing is transparent and clients are clear about what they are getting from the outset.

It sold out the first time we ran it this year. Now it's back.

Becoming a Supervisor / Team Leader is for anyone who's recently stepped into a management or supervisory role (or is about to) and needs practical support - not textbook theory.

We cover:

💥 Understanding what's expected of you as a leader
💥 Understanding how you work, and how to bring out the best in people who are different to you
💥 Communication, communication, and more communication
💥 Managing performance and having the hard conversations
💥 Delegation and decision-making
💥 Why looking after yourself matters too

To celebrate 10 years of RYHR - we're profiling some of the amazing people we've had the privelege of working with 🎉

⭐ Up this month is Whakauae Research Services ⭐

Dr. Amohia Boulton leads Whakauae Research Services - the only iwi-owned health research centre in Aotearoa. She didn't come into leadership wanting to manage people; she came in as a researcher. As Whakauae grew, she needed HR support that could hold two things at once: legal compliance, and a genuine commitment to tikanga.

Since 2022, that's what the RYHR partnership has been about. Not RYHR telling Whakauae how to be an organisation - but RYHR bringing the employment law and process lens, while Whakauae brought the tikanga lens, and each side respecting the other's ground.

In Amohia's words:
"Robyn and her team can give me clear advice without making me feel as though our Whakauae values are a problem to be worked around."

Her advice to other leaders? Start with the relationship. Get someone who understands the law - but fit matters just as much. The right HR partner helps you strengthen your organisation in a way that still feels like you.

You get promoted because you're good at your job.

Then, overnight, you're expected to:

⭐ Give feedback that actually lands
⭐ Manage someone who used to be your peer (or is still your mate)
⭐ Have the underperformance conversation
⭐ Delegate without micromanaging
⭐ Build a team that actually wants to do good work

Nobody teaches you this before you're in the role. Most new supervisors and team leaders learn it the hard way - on the job, through their own mistakes, usually under pressure.

The good news? These are learnable skills. You don't have to figure it all out alone.

Honest question for the managers and business owners here:

Have you ever had to run a disciplinary process and just...hoped you were doing it right?

You're not alone. It's one of the areas where the stakes feel highest and the guidance feels thinnest - especially in small and medium businesses without an in-house HR team.

Our Dealing with Disciplinary Issues and Beyond workshop is tomorrow and we designed it especially for managers/people leaders in this position. If getting this right (and protecting your business and your people) matters to you, this is worth the four hours - it’s not too late to jump in!

Fear not - plans are afoot 😉

To everyone who joined us, thank you - and to those who couldn't make it - see you next time 👋 ..And to anyone in HR who is interested, reach out to the RYHR team - everyone is welcome!

Finally, a massive shout out to Chrissy from E.A.T for the catering. You smash it, always.

Less than 10 days to go. Our “Dealing with Disciplinary Issues and Beyond” Workshop is on the 26th August.

We cover:
👉 Initial inquiries and investigation (at a high level)
👉 Running a disciplinary meeting
👉 Asking good questions
👉 Consideration, outcomes and warnings
👉 Setting future expectations
👉 What to do if it turns into a complaint or Personal Grievance - and
when to get professional advice

Most managers dread the word "disciplinary."

Not because they don't care about doing it right, but because they've never actually been shown how.

❓ What counts as a reasonable inquiry or investigation?

❓ What has to happen before a warning?

❓ What do you do if it turns into a Personal Grievance?

❓ When do you actually need to get professional advice?

Get it wrong, and the risk isn't just legal - it's the toll it takes on everyone involved: the employee, the manager, and the wider team.

This is one of the most requested (and most avoided) areas of people management. More on how we tackle it, next week. 👇
