Today we pause to honor the sacrifice of those who have laid down their lives for the lives of others. Today we pause to honor the Gold Star families who live Memorial Day everyday, with an ache for the lost years, lost embraces, lost dreams…lost everything that is wrapped up in a loved one that you don’t think about losing until it falls on you like a brick. Today we pause to honor all the families who, instead of running to wrap their lovers, their family, their friends in their arms when they returned home, clung to a folded flag instead.
While Memorial Day isn’t for the living, carrying on living is the hardest part of someone dying. And it’s part of honoring the sacrifice. So to the brothers and sisters of war who had to fold the flag, who lived together while trying not to die, those who hate themselves for being the one who made it home when someone else you wished would have didn’t… please don’t lose who your loved one loved in your losing them. Honor them with a life well lived. They are worth it. Call someone if the darkness gets dark. You are worth it.
