From the Desk of the Executive Director:
"Today, we remember.
I remember exactly where I was on September 11, 2001. I had just dropped my little boy off at kindergarten when an ordinary morning became a day none of us would ever forget.
Now, that little boy is preparing for his first deployment.
As the news unfolded, I remember waiting for the call to be of service. I remember checking on family in New York. I remember praying for our nation. I remember the look of despair on our President’s face. I remember watching first responders run toward the Twin Towers.
I remember being afraid.
Twenty-five years later, I sometimes fear we have forgotten more than the events of that day. We have forgotten how united we became. For a time, our differences seemed so small compared to what we shared as Americans.
But today, I am encouraged.
In the moments of silence, the long pauses, and the interruption of what would otherwise be another ordinary day, we remember together.
For those of us who have the privilege of supporting veterans, service members, and their families, today carries a special reminder of the sacrifices made through extraordinary acts of selflessness.
September 11th reminds us of the terrible cost of hatred, but also of the extraordinary strength of a people who choose to stand together.
May we never forget either lesson."
