A kitchen exhaust system can look clean where it’s easiest to see and still have buildup in areas that are harder to access.

That’s why a quick look at the hood isn’t always enough to evaluate the quality of a fire mitigation service.

Regular inspections can help you:

• Catch missed areas before buildup becomes a bigger problem
• Verify that the work completed matches what was reported
• Keep your kitchen exhaust system operating as it should
• Stay ahead of potential fire and maintenance concerns

If you’re paying for a complete cleaning, you should be able to verify that the entire system was actually serviced, not just assume it was based on how the hood looks.

What areas of a commercial kitchen exhaust system are commonly missed during cleaning?

The areas that are hardest to reach.

Ductwork can run one story or several stories between the hood and rooftop exhaust fan, and depending on how the system was built, access can be limited or sometimes nonexistent.

That can make the ductwork one of the most difficult parts of a kitchen exhaust system to properly clean and maintain.

At Bare Metal Standard, we’ve developed technology that allows us to access and clean systems that would otherwise be considered inaccessible.

Restaurant owners and operators should still understand how their ductwork is being accessed, ask for before-and-after photos, and complete visual inspections when possible.

Grease is fuel. Knowing what’s happening in the areas you can’t easily see matters.

A clean hood doesn’t always mean your entire kitchen exhaust system was properly cleaned.

After a commercial kitchen hood cleaning, there are a few things you can check:

• Look for a compliant service tag
• Review the completion report
• Check any before and after photos
• Visually inspect accessible areas of the hood, ductwork, and exhaust fan

Your vendor should also be able to explain what was cleaned, what they found, and any areas of concern within your system.

If you’re unsure what was actually serviced during your last cleaning, Bare Metal Standard can perform a full system inspection and provide a report at no cost 👉 Baremetalstandard.com

The truth is, not all vendors clean the entire system.

A clean hood doesn’t mean every part of the system has been addressed. And if you don’t know exactly what parts of your commercial kitchen exhaust system are being cleaned, ask.

Your vendor should be able to tell you what they’re cleaning, where access is limited, and how they handle those areas.

If part of the system isn’t being reached, grease can continue to build up where you can’t see it. And that is a major fire risk.

Don’t assume the entire system has been serviced. Ask your vendor.

Having your commercial kitchen exhaust system cleaned on schedule doesn’t always mean the entire system is being cleaned properly.

We’ve walked into kitchens where the exhaust system has been serviced every three months, only to find areas of the ductwork that clearly haven’t been addressed.

And most of the time, the restaurant owner or operator has no idea.

That’s why documentation, access, and knowing what was actually cleaned is so important.

At Bare Metal Standard, we remove the grease from every part of your commercial kitchen exhaust system and document the work so you know what was done. Because this isn't a cleaning business this is a fire mitigation business and grease left in sections of your ductwork is a major fire risk.

When should you call your hood cleaning company back?

Call your hood cleaning company back if your commercial kitchen exhaust system was not left in better condition than before service.

That could include excessive water on the floor, wastewater that was not properly contained, grease left behind, or another issue you notice after cleaning.

If you find one problem, it’s worth checking the rest of the kitchen exhaust system. Issues can compound, and what you see may not be the only concern.

Contact your vendor, explain what you found, request the completion report, and give them the opportunity to inspect and correct the issue.

If you’re not getting clear answers or the problem is not being addressed, Bare Metal Standard can inspect your commercial kitchen exhaust system and help identify what needs attention.

Behind every commercial kitchen are people, livelihoods, and a business working hard to serve its community.

The cause of this particular fire is still under investigation.

Regardless of the cause, incidents like this are a reminder of what’s at stake when it comes to commercial kitchen fire safety.

Fire mitigation isn’t a one-time task. It’s an ongoing commitment to keeping your kitchen, your team, and your operation as protected as possible. Regular cleaning, inspection, and maintenance are all part of a comprehensive approach to fire mitigation.

Make kitchen safety part of your routine.

Today’s episode of “Guess What We Pulled Out of an Exhaust System.” 👀

This buildup was removed during a recent industrial plant cleaning.

Industrial exhaust systems operate in demanding environments, and residue and contaminants can accumulate inside the system. Regular cleaning helps remove that buildup, maintain airflow, and keep the system operating as intended.

Bare Metal Standard works beyond commercial kitchens, providing specialized exhaust cleaning for industrial facilities and other complex environments.

Because sometimes the biggest maintenance needs are the ones you can’t see.

Water pooling in your kitchen exhaust system after a hood cleaning can reveal an important issue.

Kitchen exhaust ductwork should be properly graded so grease and liquids can drain rather than collect inside the system.

If water is pooling in the ductwork after a hood cleaning, grease can pool there during normal kitchen operations too. That leads to grease accumulation and increased fire risk.

Bare Metal Standard provides kitchen exhaust cleaning, inspections, and deficiency identification to help commercial kitchens identify concerns that could affect system performance or fire safety.

Finding water after a hood cleaning service does not automatically mean something went wrong.

What matters is whether the water is simply residual from the cleaning process or a sign of a condition that needs attention.

That is where a qualified vendor should be able to help. They should assess what happened, correct anything related to the service itself, and identify when the issue may be connected to a larger deficiency within the kitchen exhaust system.

The job is not just to clean the system. It is to help leave the kitchen exhaust system in a safer, better condition and identify deficiencies that may need attention.

Bare Metal Standard helps commercial kitchens address grease buildup, system deficiencies, and potential fire risks.
