Hot take: “move fast and fix AI safety later” is not a serious strategy.
Dr. Craig Kaplan makes the case that safety-by-design is not the enemy of innovation. It is what allows innovation to scale without becoming brittle, dangerous, or disconnected from human values. That is especially relevant now, as headlines about autonomous agents and more powerful models keep accelerating.
One of the most useful ideas in this Polaris discussion is that alignment cannot come from logic alone. AI systems need values, and those values have to come from people. Better yet, they may be safer when shaped by many people rather than a concentrated few.
For business leaders, that means the real competitive advantage may not be raw model power. It may be better judgment, better governance, and better design.
