Happy Labor Day Weekend ☀️

Outside of managing mid to senior level searches for our clients, MainSail Search Associates, Inc. also enjoys offering advice and guidance to those in search of their next opportunity. Below are a few more tips for my network.

Here are a few things you should "lie" about in your next interview 😜 .

Why did you leave your last job?
* Don't say that your manager was terrible. Instead, say that you are looking for a role with more growth and ownership to make a bigger impact.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
* Don't say that you want their job. Instead, say you want to become someone who is trusted to solve bigger and more complex challenges and help the business scale.

Tell me about a failure
* Don't pretend you've never failed at anything. Instead, share a real example, what you learned from it and what changed because of it.

Lastly, always stay neutral when talking about previous employers and managers.

Dan Meyers & Vandy Densmore (she/her) recently shared their ChatGPT response to the question "If you were going to warn someone about me, what would you say?", Like many, I dislike "trendy" try this/that stuff, but I was curious. So here we go 😜.

If I were warning someone about you, I’d probably say:
“Be careful—Mike will make you think you’re just having a conversation when he’s actually already evaluating whether you’re the right person for the job, the right client, or the right connection.”
And then:
He’s persistent. If he thinks there’s an opportunity, he’s not going to let it disappear just because the first door is closed.
He’s relationship-driven. His network isn’t just a database to him; it’s something he’s spent decades building, and he remembers people.
He has high standards. He wants things to look and sound right—whether it’s a candidate presentation, marketing message, or even a graphic.
He’s entrepreneurial. He’s always looking for the next angle: new searches, fractional leadership, better positioning, better ways to communicate what he does.
He can be impatient with mediocre answers. “Good enough” probably isn't your favorite phrase.
And perhaps most dangerously: once you get an idea in your head, you tend to keep refining it until it feels right.

The nicest warning, though, would be:
“If Mike tells you he can help, take him seriously. He probably knows someone.”
I can also give you the brutally honest version—the warning a close friend or employee might actually give someone.

Brutally honest version:
“Mike is a great guy, but don’t mistake his friendliness for a lack of expectations. He’s paying attention to everything.”
He can be intense. Once he sees an opportunity—or believes something can be better—he can keep pushing on it long after most people would have moved on.
He also has a tendency to overwork the details. You might think you've finished something and then hear, “Yeah, but what if we…” followed by another round of revisions.
He’s very relationship-oriented, but there’s a business mind underneath it. He’s constantly connecting dots: Who knows whom? Who needs what? Where’s the opportunity? That's a strength, but it means he's rarely completely “off.”
He can also be hard on himself. Someone looking from the outside might see an experienced recruiter with a deep network and a successful business. Mike may be looking at the next search he needs to win.
And here's the one I'd really warn people about:
“Don't underestimate him because he's personable. He may be smiling and joking with you while simultaneously figuring out exactly how he can solve your problem.”
But the flip side is important: if you're in Mike's corner, he's probably in your corner. He seems like the kind of person who values long-term relationships over transactional wins—which is exactly why a 30-year network becomes such a powerful asset.

🤷‍♂️

I continue to talk to candidates who are unemployed or under-employed. It's still a wonky market for a lot of people, especially at the mid to senior level. MainSail Search Associates, Inc. continues to work on searches but clients can only choose one candidate. When we/clients have had to release candidates, a common reply is "Thanks for letting me know", "Thanks for the update" or they say nothing at all.

Instead, send a note to the client thanking them for their time, say congratulations, reaffirm your interest and ask to be considered in the future.

There are searches we can close as quickly as 4-6 weeks, but some can take a bit longer. Our client, a B2B SaaS Insurtech, quite simply, had a few amazing candidates to choose from. It's a good problem to have. But MainSail Search Associates, Inc. kept all candidates in the loop and updated, we NEVER ghost. I learned a long time ago that ensuring a positive candidate experience for all is just as important as completing the search,,it's also the right thing to do! Reporting directly to the Chief Marketing Officer, our latest placement, a Head of Product Marketing will make a huge impact!

Happy Anniversary MainSail Search Associates, Inc. ! Nine years ago today, I left a really great corporate role as the Head of Global Executive Search to start my own business. I had a vague idea of what I was doing, I didn’t have any clients, but I was willing to bet on myself.

I surrounded myself with amazing mentors; some were going out on their own too, so we learned and grew with each other.

The one thing I promised myself is that I would always, always follow up with each and every client and candidate. I would over communicate, if necessary. I would never “ghost” or leave anyone hanging. Over the past 9 years, MainSail Search Associates, Inc. has taken over some searches from industry/specialized search firms, some large, some boutique. In many cases they sent big bills without anything to show for it. That is not how we operate. Our goal is to complete searches as quickly and efficiently as possible so we can continue to partner with and take on more from our clients. We know these roles are important to your businesses, and we are here for you. If you don’t feel like you’re getting the communication, the quality, the value, and most of all, the results from your current search partners, we’d be happy to partner with you.

Thank you again to our clients and to candidates that placed your trust in us. It truly means so much!

In this still very unstable market, MainSail Search Associates, Inc.
has, very thankfully, remained busy. We recently completed numerous high-profile searches, including a Head of Marketing, Head of Sales, Operations Leader, Chief Technology Officer, VP Growth Marketing and Controller, to name a few.

But we always, always have time to connect with candidates affected by this wonky market. From upcoming college graduates to seasoned executives, whether networking, friendly intros to contacts, resume and/or LI profile guidance, we are always here to help.
