Thanks to generous donor support, we have an update on Yokhana from his father today! Yokhana, 8, traveled from Iraq to Cyprus earlier this month to receive care by Shriners Children’s medical professionals at the Eastern Mediterranean Pediatric Hub at the Paraskevaides Foundation’s clinic. Yokhana was born without arms and little hope to be self sufficient, without medical interventions. Unfortunately, these were not available to him in Iraq. In Cyprus, however, he received his first prosthetic arm, allowing him to feed himself for the first time, bringing tears to his father’s eyes. A few weeks later, he is now helping his father with chores back in Iraq. Yokhana still needs a surgery as well as another prosthetic arm with an elbow which will allow him even more mobility. We hope to bring him back to Cyprus in November. Please help kids like Yokhana and others whose lives can be forever changed with your support. After receiving more burn reconstruction surgery this week at the Shriners Children’s Eastern Mediterranean Regional Medical Hub in Cyprus last week, Abdullah, 14, had another life changing day. He received his first “haircut” in 8 years when medical team members took him to be fitted for a protective wig. Abdullah was caught in an explosion 8 years ago at a Syrian refugee camp. Due to his extreme burns, he lost his hair, ears and many fingers. The wig will help protect his delicate skin while allowing him to look more like the other kids (his wish). Thanks to donors to Shriners Children’s for making this moment possible for Abdullah. Thanks to Red Cross who provides interpreters and comfort to our patients and thanks to the George and Thelma Paraskevaides Foundation for your decades long support. Please join us in supporting more children who need humanitarian medical care in this region.

Patients were so pleased when His Excellency Yousef Sultan Laram, Ambassador of Qatar to Cyprus, kindly visited Shriners Children’s Eastern Mediterranean Pediatric Medical clinic at Paraskevaides Foundation this week. After we visited the Qatar Embassy earlier in the week to share news about our humanitarian efforts, Ambassador Yousef personally visited with the families at the clinic and learned about their life changing care. There were 183 treated, including 28 surgeries, and delivery of dozens of prosthetics/orthotics to children from 9 countries in the region. Going above and beyond, he contacted the Syrian Head of Mission to share the important news, prompting an immediate visit from HE Dr Ammar Awad. We look forward to partnering and encourage everyone across the region and world to join Shriners Children’s efforts to provide humanitarian medical care.

When the Syrian Charge’d Affairs learned about Shriners Children’s humanitarian care efforts in Cyprus, he immediately drove right over to greet the families and learn of their life changing medical care. He met with 6 Syrian children and their parents who were burned in an explosion at their refugee camp five years ago and have been coming for burn reconstruction surgeries by Shriners Children’s Surgeons for the past few years. The children come pre and post operations to the clinic hosted by the George and Thelma Paraskevaides Foundation, where he greeted them. Together, we hope to bring even more regional children in desperate need of humanitarian care at the Shriners Children’s Eastern Mediterranean Pediatric Medical hub. Please join us in supporting this important cause!

An honor and pleasure to welcome HE UAE Ambassador Mohamed Al Shehhi to Shriners Children’s Eastern Mediterranean Pediatric Clinic at the Paraskevaides Foundation. HE spent time with some of the regional patients (6 Syrian refugees and families) and learned about Shriners Children’s humanitarian medical care for 183 children this week, including 28 life changing surgeries and the delivery of dozens of prosthetics/orthotics for kids from 9 countries. The Ambassador spoke to medical team and foundation members to learn of the triumphs and opportunities of bringing even more children from the region for humanitarian care and saw first-hand what it means to each child and family. The Ambassador spoke of UAE’s ongoing commitment and support of humanitarian efforts in the world, which I know well and am so very humbled and grateful for their leadership. As HE Mohamed says, we are all human, regardless of geography and religion, and deserve respect and compassion.

Thank you for helping these children smile! Shriners Children’s and the Paraskevaides team members are always amazed at the positive attitudes and resilience of these medically fragile children from all over the region. They come for treatment, which can sometimes be painful. Yet, they keep smiling through it all. That’s why it’s so important to donate for not only the medical care but for the fun activities that keep their minds off of the pain. Thanks to all our supporters. And to others: Please give!
