When is the last time your team played at work?

More than a fun ice breaker or the annual company celebration?

Play at work has lead to higher psychological safety and innovation in the workplace.

Teams celebrate their strengths in diversity more and see a better support for work life balance.

So maybe Improv at work is your introduction back to play at work.

Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that current Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was in an improv group in college?

Some of your favorite leaders have a history with Improvisation.

Neil Blumenthal, Daniel Pink, Marissa Mayer, and Michael Dubin all have used improv in their companies and careers to support leadership development, communication, and to bring more play to the workplace.

Every office needs play.

Not because people need to be entertained. Because play helps people connect, listen, adapt, and think faster together.

A lot of our work at WitWorks has been inspired by the work of Stuart Brown and the ideas in Play.

We use applied improvisation to help teams practice real workplace skills through active experiences instead of lectures.

When people laugh together, take small risks, and stay present in the moment, trust grows faster.

If you care about learning, leadership, or building stronger teams, take a look at the work being done by the . There is a lot there worth exploring.

Improv has had such a strong impact on the lives and careers of WitWorks co-founders and that they began to wonder if others experienced the same lasting effect. To find out, they reconnected with old friends from their college improv troupe to see how improv may have shaped their careers, relationships, and lives long after graduation.

Read our May blog, The Improv Effect, to hear their stories. Link in bio.

Thank you to our brilliant friends for collaborating with us on this piece.

In 2008, Alex traveled to Chicago to study at The Second City Training Center. It was a summer intensive. It was his first real time learning improv in a serious way. That experience helped lead to Fishbowl Improv Improv, TBD: The Improvised Musical, and later WitWorks.

Last Friday felt special.

Bluebird Improv performed at Hashtag Comedy Company. Two full shows. A strong cast, including Matt Walsh, Edi Patterson, and Marc Evan Jackson.

That alone meant a lot to a community that both Alex and Katie have supported over the last 15 years.

But what stuck with Alex most was seeing Joe Canale.

Back in 2008, Alex watched him perform on the mainstage in Chicago. His first professional sketch and improv show. He was new to improv and trying to learn what great looked like.

On friday Alex recognized that same greatness he saw as a blue eyed baby improviser in the performers on stage.

It also felt like a check.

The work on stage that night was great but it also made sense and didn’t seem unattainable. It is the same kind of work Alex, Katie and the rest of TBD aim for on stage.

Watching these pros go at it again, years later, showed him they aren’t just on the right path, they can walk side by side with the greats.

Alex got to talk with Joe after the show and share that he was one of the first improvisers he ever saw live and the journey both him and Katie have been on over the last few years.

That moment meant a lot and was a great full circle improv moment.

TBT to the first improv workshop and hosted together back in 2011 as college students for Christopher M. Farris's middle schoolers.

The dots all connect when looking back at them! We're still up to the same ol' tricks.

More trust?
Better teamwork?
Clearer communication?

That’s the work we’re focused on at WitWorks in 2026.
