👂💬 "I can hear you, but I can't understand what you're saying."

Sound familiar?

Hearing loss doesn't always mean everything sounds quieter. Sometimes, certain speech sounds become harder to distinguish, making conversations feel muffled or unclear—especially when background noise is present.

During Audiology Awareness Month, we're reminding you that understanding speech is just as important as hearing sound.

At The Hearing Center of Ohio, comprehensive hearing evaluations can help identify changes in your hearing and determine what solutions may help you communicate more clearly.

🔊 Loud sound doesn't have to hurt to affect your hearing.

Concerts, sporting events, power tools, lawn equipment, workplaces, and personal listening devices can all contribute to your overall noise exposure.

During Protect Your Hearing Month, make hearing protection part of the plan. Lower the volume when you can, take breaks from loud environments, and use appropriate hearing protection when you know things are going to get noisy.

Noise-induced hearing loss is preventable, so protecting your ears now can make a difference later.

👂 Hearing protection isn't just for the workplace.

Maybe your weekends are spent at concerts. Maybe you're in the garage using power tools, mowing the lawn, riding a motorcycle, or enjoying another noisy hobby.

Repeated exposure to loud sounds can add up over time.

The best hearing protection is something appropriate for the activity—and something you'll actually wear. During Protect Your Hearing Month, consider where noise shows up most often in your routine.

The Hearing Center of Ohio can help you explore hearing protection solutions that fit your lifestyle.

🎧 Your favorite playlist doesn't have to come at the expense of your hearing.

Headphones and earbuds put sound close to your ears, so both volume and listening time matter. If you regularly turn the volume up to overcome background noise, your ears may be getting more sound exposure than you realize.

Try lowering the volume, taking listening breaks, and using noise-canceling features when appropriate so you don't feel the need to overpower the sounds around you.

This Protect Your Hearing Month, give your ears a little downtime too. 👂

🔊👂 October is Protect Your Hearing Month!

You protect your eyes from the sun and your skin with sunscreen—but are you protecting your hearing from loud noise?

Everyday activities like concerts, sporting events, power tools, lawn equipment, and listening through headphones can expose your ears to potentially harmful sound levels. Over time, repeated exposure can contribute to permanent noise-induced hearing loss.

This month, make hearing protection a habit:
🎧 Keep personal listening volumes at a comfortable level
⏸️ Take breaks from prolonged loud noise
🦻 Wear appropriate hearing protection when things get loud
👂 Pay attention to changes in your hearing

Your hearing is worth protecting—not just this month, but every day.

FAQ Friday: Are hearing aids waterproof?

Most hearing aids are not waterproof, although many modern devices offer some level of water resistance. That can provide extra protection from everyday moisture, sweat, or an unexpected splash—but it doesn’t mean your hearing aids should go swimming with you!

To help protect your devices:
💧 Remove them before swimming or showering
🧼 Keep them clean and dry
🌙 Store them in a dry place overnight
🦻 Ask about drying or dehumidifying options if moisture is a frequent concern

If you're unsure how much water resistance your hearing aids offer, The Hearing Center of Ohio can help you understand your devices and how to properly care for them.

👂💡 Did you know the shape of your ear helps you figure out where sounds are coming from?

The visible part of your outer ear, called the pinna, does more than funnel sound into the ear canal. Its unique curves and ridges change the way sound reaches your ears, providing cues your brain can use to determine where a sound is located—including whether it’s coming from above or below you.

Research has even demonstrated how adaptable the brain can be when those sound cues change.

It’s another reminder that hearing is about much more than simply detecting sound. Your ears and brain work together to help you understand and navigate the world around you.
