The day you became the answer is the day you became the bottleneck…

The hardest habit to break after a promotion is the one that earned it: being the person with the answer.

For years, that instinct was your edge. The team brought you the hard call, you solved it, and your value was obvious in the moment. So you keep doing it at the executive level, certain that being the sharpest mind in the room is still the job.

It is not. At the top, every answer you hand down is a decision your team never learns to make. The questions keep routing to you, the pace of the business now runs at the speed of your inbox, and the talented people around you slowly shrink to the size of the room you leave them.

This is the quiet trap of shift number one. Being the answer feels like leadership. It is actually a bottleneck wearing the costume of helpfulness.

The executives who scale do something that feels deeply uncomfortable at first. They stop supplying answers and start setting direction. They make the destination unmistakable, then let the team own the path to it. They trade the satisfaction of solving for the leverage of multiplying.

Set direction, not answers.

So before your next meeting, look honestly at the questions headed your way, and ask which ones you are answering because the team cannot, and which ones you are answering because you still need to be the one who can.
