Join the Julius L. Chambers Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute and in highlighting Dr. Zainab Afzal, this month’s featured researcher in the RCMI Investigator’s Corner.

Dr. Afzal is an early-career researcher whose work examines how environmental contaminants, particularly PFAS “forever chemicals,” disrupt embryonic development and contribute to adverse health outcomes. Through her pilot research project at , she uses zebrafish embryos and advanced genomic technologies, including single-nucleus sequencing and ATAC-sequencing, to investigate how PFAS exposure alters gene expression and DNA/chromatin organization at the single-cell level during development.
Her research aims to uncover molecular mechanisms linked to developmental delays, leukemia, language deficits, and other long-term health outcomes associated with PFAS exposure, while helping inform future public health guidelines and environmental policies.

Dr. Afzal’s work also reflects NCCU’s commitment to advancing innovative biomedical research and creating hands-on STEM research opportunities for students through exposure to cutting-edge genomic and epigenetic technologies.
We are proud to celebrate Dr. Afzal’s contributions to research, scientific innovation, and public health.

Even in quiet seasons, the work in the community continues.

Last week, we had the opportunity to provide blood pressure screenings and hypertension health education at a community event organized by the Eta Beta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and March of Dimes.

We had the opportunity to provide blood pressure screenings and hypertension health education at the community event, as well as have meaningful conversations with community members on blood pressure awareness and prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices.

We are grateful for this opportunity to serve and collaborate with organizations committed to improving community health outcomes. We look forward to future partnerships and continued impact.

If you were unable to participate before the initial deadlines for the RCMI Maternal and Child Health Collection Drive, there is still an opportunity to contribute!

Due to continued interest and community support, the collection drive has been extended, allowing additional time to donate essential items that support Black mothers and their infants.

We are currently accepting items such as diapers, wipes, baby clothing, blankets, postpartum care essentials, and self-care packages for new mothers.

Drop-off Location: Julius L. Chambers Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute (Room 109)
Community service hours are available (1 item = 1 hour, up to 5 hours)

This extension provides another chance for students, faculty, staff, and community members to make a meaningful impact by supporting maternal and child health in our community.
