Halloween week is prime season for vandalism and property crime. State Farm reports vehicle vandalism claims nearly 34% higher on Halloween than other October days; Travelers reports about 17% more crime claims.

That's the backdrop for tonight: Devil's Night, October 30. In 1984, Detroit firefighters put out more than 800 fires around Halloween. It didn't stop on its own — in 1995, neighbors started Angels' Night patrols. By 2021, just three structure fires on October 30.

This isn't about fear. It's about staying alert:

• Porch lights on
• Lock your cars, bring valuables inside
• Talk with your neighbors — a watched block is a safe block
• See something at a vacant house? Don't confront — call it in

The Pentagon is now planning to require every major U.S. military base to be able to run on its own for at least 90 days — no outside power, water, fuel, or communications if war cuts the supply lines. It's called FORTRESS, and it's the military's plan for when the systems we all depend on go dark.

Now ask yourself: if the military is planning for 90 days, what is your household ready for? Three days? One?

This is the urgent part. No family, no church, no neighborhood organization should be figuring this out alone. With Election Day days away, this is the moment for churches, community groups, and local leaders to come together and get people organized — block by block, family by family.

Dearborn, Saturday, Oct. 17. A man walks into a sneaker store with his girlfriend. Seconds after shaking hands with someone inside, he's jumped.

His girlfriend pulls a handgun from her purse and fires three times, hitting the attacker in the back. She calls 911 herself. She was arrested — and three days later, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said no charges. Not enough evidence to prove she wasn't acting in self-defense, or in defense of someone else.

Police say charges against whoever started the fight are still possible.

The part to sit with: a crowded store, a fight, a gun — all of it in seconds. Every round has somewhere to go, and every decision gets judged afterward, on video.

A carry license doesn't settle whether a shooting was lawful. Training teaches you the law before you're the one making the call.

Sunday morning you get an extra hour. Spend one minute of it.

When the clocks fall back, change the batteries in every smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector in your house. Then press the test button. If it doesn't scream, it doesn't protect you.

Dead batteries are the reason most smoke alarms fail in a fire. One minute, twice a year — that's the whole job.

Saturday is a good day to clean out the medicine cabinet.

Michigan State Police posts across the state are open Saturday, October 24, from 10 AM to 2 PM for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Bring your expired and unused prescription pills — no questions asked, and everything collected gets destroyed.

Old pills sitting in a cabinet are how misuse starts, and how kids and visitors get into something they shouldn't. Clearing them out is a simple safety step for your house.

Pills only — liquids, inhalers, patches, and syringes won't be accepted. Find your nearest post at Michigan.gov/MSPPosts. Can't make Saturday? You can drop pills off anonymously at any MSP post Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.

Michigan just made gift card draining a felony.

Two new laws signed October 5 add gift card fraud to the state's Organized Retail Crime Act. Steal the numbers, tamper with the packaging, drain the funds — up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

How the scam works: thieves copy the numbers off gift cards on the rack, then put the packaging back like nothing happened. You buy it, load it, and they drain it before your gift ever gets used.

Holiday season is gift card season. Before you grab one: check the packaging. Torn, resealed, or the PIN already showing? Hand it to an employee and pick another. Keep the receipt.

Retailers — this is organized crime, not shoplifting. Train your staff to spot tampered cards and pull them off the floor.

A Detroit high school football coach is facing 17 criminal counts after forcing his way into a home and shooting a woman and her 7-year-old daughter.

The argument started between two young children. An adult brought a gun to it.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy's question: when did it become okay for an adult to introduce a fi***rm into an argument between two young children?

A fi***rm doesn't settle disputes. It ends futures — the victims', and the shooter's. A coach, a mentor to kids, now facing 17 counts because he couldn't walk away.

This is what I teach in CPL class. Carrying a gun means mastering the moment you DON'T use it. De-escalation isn't weakness — it's the whole job.

First freeze could hit Michigan Friday night.

Rain moves in Thursday, a cold front follows Friday, and Friday night temps could drop to freezing — the season's first freeze in parts of Michigan.

Cold is a slow emergency. Pipes burst. Cars won't start. Power outages hit different at 30 degrees. Most people don't think about it until they're standing in a cold house at midnight.

Tonight and tomorrow: disconnect the outdoor hoses, cover the faucets, check your car's antifreeze, and make sure your heat actually works before you need it. Space heaters: 3 feet from everything, never unattended.

Michigan's safe-storage law just showed its teeth.

A Detroit father is facing criminal charges after his 8-year-old found an unsecured gun at home and shot his 11-year-old brother. The kids — ages 4, 8, and 11 — were home alone.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy's message: safely store your weapons at all times — no exceptions.

This is exactly what I teach in CPL class. Owning a fi***rm is a right. Leaving it where a child can reach it is a crime — and now a Detroit family is living the reason why.

A cable lock or a basic lockbox would have prevented all of it. Free gun locks are available at every Detroit precinct.

A 55-year-old Detroit man is facing a terrorism charge after threatening Mayor Mary Sheffield — first at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, then again at Detroit Public Safety headquarters. GPS tether, house arrest, up to 20 years on the table.

Threats don't start at the threat. There's a pattern: grievance, fixation, showing up where you don't belong, testing reactions. Every EP professional assesses the same question — is this person moving toward action?

Prosecutor Kym Worthy says threats against public officials are rising and won't be tolerated. If you run a business or manage people, the red flags are the same in your world. Document them early. Act on them early.
