When the North Tower was struck on September 11, 2001, Frank De Martini and Pablo Ortiz were working on the 88th floor, just below the impact zone.

They found a way out.

Frank sent his wife down the stairs toward safety, telling her he would be right behind her. But people were trapped above them.

So Frank and Pablo grabbed flashlights, crowbars, and other tools and went up. They forced open jammed doors, cleared damaged passages and helped trapped workers reach the stairs.

They just kept going up. Their efforts, along with those of their coworkers, are credited with helping save at least 50 people.

Neither made it out of the North Tower.

Twenty-five years later, we remember Frank and Pablo. We remember every person who didn’t make it home that day, and the families who still carry that loss.

Did you know that at the height of AOL in the 1990s, roughly half of all CDs being manufactured worldwide reportedly had an AOL logo on them?

AOL’s famous free-trial discs were everywhere. They showed up in magazines, bookstores, Blockbuster stores, banks, and millions of mailboxes. They were even included with deliveries of Omaha Steaks. AOL ultimately says it distributed around one billion trial discs.

And the strategy worked.

By 1996, AOL had grown to around 8 million subscribers. That year, it introduced unlimited access for $19.95 a month, replacing plans that limited how many hours customers could spend online.

People flooded the service so quickly that AOL couldn’t keep up. Customers routinely encountered busy signals when they tried to connect, average daily usage more than doubled in a matter of months, and AOL temporarily pulled advertising while it scrambled to add capacity.

For millions of people, those little discs were their introduction to the Internet.

It’s hard to believe there was a time when getting online meant finding an AOL CD, listening to a modem dial a phone number, and hoping you didn’t get a busy signal.

We’ve come a long way!
