First frost usually arrives around mid-October in the Valley, and often earlier in the hilltowns. The cold doesn't wipe pests out. It sends them looking for shelter, and your house is the warmest option around. The outdoor work you do this month pays off all winter.

Share this with anyone who's counting on the cold to fix it.

Timing is your best clue. Scratching in the attic around dawn and dusk usually means squirrels. Quiet skittering in the walls at night points to mice. Busy sounds at 2 a.m. could be flying squirrels, which are more common around here than people think.

If you see fine webbing in the flour or small moths flutter out when you open the pantry, you probably have Indian meal moths. Throw out anything affected, wipe down the shelves, and move dry goods into glass or hard plastic containers.

Save this before your next baking day.

Birdseed and dry pet food stored in the garage are two of the most common mouse attractions we find in the fall. Move both into a metal can with a tight lid. It's a cheap fix that takes a lot of pressure off the rest of the house.

Share this with a friend with a well-stocked bird feeder.

For us, it's the first "there's a mouse in the silverware drawer" call of the season. It came early this year. We'd love to know what fall looks like at your house.

Firewood stacked against the house makes a cozy home for mice, carpenter ants, and spiders. Keep the pile about 20 feet out and off the ground. Bring in only a day or two's worth at a time, and knock each piece off before it comes inside.

Fieldstone foundations, bulkhead doors, and settled sill plates are the first places we check on fall calls. Close the bulkhead and look for light around the edges from inside. Then check where pipes, dryer vents, and fuel lines come through the wall.

Remember this checklist for your next trip to the basement.

When a field gets cut, the mice living in it lose their cover and their food at the same time. Homes that border fields often see activity pick up within a couple of weeks of harvest. If a tractor has been out behind your place, it's a good week to walk your foundation.

Live near a field? Send us a message and we'll tell you what to look for.

On a bright morning, turn off the garage lights and look at the bottom of the door. A mouse can get through a gap about the size of a dime. A new door sweep costs a few dollars and is one of the best small fixes you can make before November.

Share this with a neighbor who's been hearing scratching.
