We're excited to share information about two Purdue Black Alumni Organization (PBAO) scholarships administered through the Greater Lafayette Community Foundation.

Since we aren’t able to access student email lists directly, we’re leaning on campus partners to help get the word out. These scholarships are meant to support students of Black, African-American, and Hispanic descent, though those details aren’t included in the public posting. We’d be so grateful for your help sharing this opportunity through your channels.

The application deadline is March 1, 2026. Thank you for your partnership and support.

Before Jesse Jackson became a household name in the civil rights movement, he was a standout athlete with a real shot at a future in professional football. As the quarterback at North Carolina A&T, Jackson impressed with both his leadership and athletic skill. The possibility of entering the NFL was very much on the table. But instead of heading down that high‑profile sports path, he chose a different journey — one that led him to become one of the most influential voices in American history.

In the early 1960s, Jackson left football behind and dedicated himself to the civil rights movement, joining Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). From there, Jackson became a key figure in historic campaigns for voter rights, economic justice, and global human rights. His work took him from grassroots activism to running for president, proving that the path to change often requires personal sacrifice.

Jesse Jackson could have chosen the fame and fortune of a sports career, but instead, he picked the difficult, sometimes thankless road of activism. That decision reshaped the landscape of American politics and civil rights — showing that the greatest legacies aren’t always the ones that make headlines, but the ones that change lives.
