in 1927, tennis legend Althea Gibson was born.

Gibson would go on to break the color barrier in international tennis and become the first Black player to win a Grand Slam singles title. Her historic victories helped open doors for generations of Black athletes who followed.

Today, we remember a champion whose impact reached far beyond the court.

The histories of Witherspoon Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis and Crispus Attucks High School have been deeply intertwined. Generations of Attucks alumni have also been part of the Witherspoon family, helping shape the story of faith, Black excellence, perseverance, and community in Indianapolis.

Today, we proudly celebrate one of those history-makers—Bill Hampton, a member of the legendary 1955 Crispus Attucks State Championship basketball team and an Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inductee.

On Sunday, August 23, Mr. Hampton will celebrate the release and signing of his new memoir, Guarded: A Memoir of Basketball and Breaking Barriers, just two days before his 91st birthday!

This is more than a book release—it is a celebration of a living legacy and a generation that broke barriers and opened doors for those who came behind them.

Daniel Cressy is stepping into a new chapter.

The 23-year-old Metairie native became the first person in Louisiana to be functionally cured of sickle cell disease through gene therapy at Manning Family Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.

After more than two years of treatment, Cressy rang the bell on June 22, surrounded by his family, care team, and community leaders.
