I’ve been thinking a lot about how we live in a world that has moved online, where sound bites fill our days, how do we truly see others—and allow ourselves to be seen?

We begin by slowing down and listening beyond the words.

To me, listening beyond the words means noticing the pause before someone answers, the change in their voice, the story they keep repeating, or the feeling hidden beneath “I’m fine.” It means listening for what may be too tender, frightening or difficult to say out loud.

It asks us to set aside our need to fix, advise or prepare our response—and simply become curious about the person in front of us.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is our full presence—the kind that quietly says, “I see you. I hear you. Tell me more …You matter… how are you really doing? “

Being seen, heard and understood isn’t just something we need. It’s also something we can give.💜

Sometimes we know exactly what we need, but we keep looking for it in places and people that can’t give it to us.

We keep trying because we have a story about where love, belonging, support, purpose—or even happiness—should come from.

One of the lessons I’ve learned, both personally and in my work with clients, is that there comes a time when we have to loosen our grip on that story. Where we learn to go where the love and support is… not where we think it’s suppose to be. 💜

I’ve always loved these words about courage . But yesterday, I found myself thinking about courage a little differently. I had one of those moments of clarity that often comes after a conversation.

A conversation hadn’t gone the way I had hoped. And initially, it would have been easy to focus on what the other person said, what they did, or what I wished they had done differently.
But after sitting with it, I found myself asking a harder question:

What was my part?

That question changed everything.
Maybe I didn’t listen as well as I could have.
Maybe I reacted instead of responding.
Maybe there was something I needed to say that I didn’t.
Maybe I was so busy wanting to be understood that I missed what the other person was trying to tell me.

I spend a lot of time helping people prepare for difficult conversations. We talk about courage as the willingness to walk into the room, speak our truth, set the boundary, or say the hard thing.
But sometimes the real courage comes after the conversation.
When we are willing to get curious instead of defensive.
When we can stop keeping score long enough to look at ourselves.
When we can say, I wish I had handled that differently.

Because awareness matters. But awareness without action can leave us standing in exactly the same place.

Courage is what puts awareness into motion.
It’s the apology.
The amends.
The circling back.
The willingness to listen differently.
The text that says, “I’ve been thinking about our conversation. Could we try again?”

Yesterday reminded me that being a coach certainly doesn’t mean I always get the conversation right. It means I’m still willing to learn from the ones I get wrong. Maybe that’s part of what it means to keep becoming the best version of ourselves.

We can't control how the other person responds. Courage doesn't guarantee the ending we want. It simply asks us to have the conversation that is ours to have.

Sometimes courage is moving forward.
And sometimes courage is being willing to go back and try again.

I’ve had enough endings in my life to know that when something ends, we rarely know what comes next.
A relationship changes.
A career shifts.
Someone we love is gone.
Our health changes.
The life we thought we were going to have suddenly looks very different.

And sometimes we stand there looking backward, grieving what was, without realizing that something new is quietly beginning.
I think one of the hardest parts of sometimes moving forward is that new beginnings rarely announce themselves.
Sometimes they look like uncertainty.
Sometimes they feel like loss.
Sometimes they begin with simply asking ourselves:
Who am I now? And who do I want to become from here?

I smile sometimes when I realize that as I am moving in to this next quarter of my life.. I’m still asking those questions.

Maybe that’s the point.
Becoming isn’t something we finish.
There is always another layer to uncover, another truth to understand, another opportunity to choose how we want to live the life in front of us.

I often have clients tell me, “I feel like I’ve lost who I was. I just want to get back to the best version of myself.”
And my response is:
What if the best version of you isn’t behind you?
What if the best version of you is patiently waiting to unfold?

Maybe that’s the invitation hidden inside some of our endings.
Not to go back. Not even necessarily to “start over.”
But to trust that there is still more of us to discover.
To keep learning.
To keep choosing.
To keep unfolding.
To just keep becoming.

The Space Between
We don’t always get to choose what happens to us.
We don’t get to choose how someone else behaves, what they say, or what life unexpectedly places in our path.

But there is a space—sometimes no more than a breath—between what happens and what we do next.
And that space matters.

Because it is there that we have the opportunity to notice what is happening within us before we react. To recognize the old patterns, the fear, the need to defend, fix, please, or withdraw.
And perhaps choose something different.

Sometimes the most powerful question we can ask ourselves is:
Who do I want to be in this moment?
Not who have I always been.
Not what does fear want me to do.
Not even what do I wish the other person would do.
But who do I choose to be?

That small space can change a conversation.
A relationship.
A decision.
And over time, perhaps even a life.

Because growth isn’t only about what happens to us.
It’s about who we become in the space between.

“Restoration is a return to what was, transformation is a transition to what will be”

I’ve been thinking a lot about where we are headed. In so many ways the old paradigm is cracking open. Do we put our energy into what was not working or do we focus on transforming into our best selves. As the light begins to shine through those cracks a new path will appear. Many of my clients are looking for answers as to what this new normal will look like. My experience has taught me when we can walk in grounded confidence healthy choices will appear. We just need to do the inner work to be ready. 💜

There are moments in life that quietly divide our lives into before and after. One of those moments for me came in 2012.

Every day for thirty days, I drove to radiation treatments after my breast cancer diagnosis. During those drives, I listened to The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown.

Her words became a companion on the road. More than helping me through treatment, they gently reminded me of something I had forgotten: that even in our hardest seasons, we are still worthy of love, belonging, and hope.

A year later, I traveled to San Antonio to become a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator. I wanted to understand more deeply what it meant to live and lead with courage, and to bring those lessons into my own coaching practice. That week with Brené, her team, Kristin Neff, and nearly one hundred fellow seekers from around the world changed my life forever.

Fast forward to May of this year. After my accident and months of recovery, those same lessons have come back to me in an entirely new way. Recovery has a way of stripping away the illusion that strength means having it all together.

I've learned that courage isn't found in dramatic moments. More often, it looks like showing up for physical therapy when you're discouraged. Accepting help when you'd rather be independent. Trusting that healing is happening even when you can't yet see it.
It also means accepting limitations when reality finally catches up with you—when you can no longer pretend you're capable of more than your body is ready for. That lesson has been one of the hardest... and one of the most freeing.
I've also realized something else.

So much of life is spent trying to return to who we were before the diagnosis... before the loss... before the accident... before the heartbreak.
But what if life isn't asking us to go back?
What if it's gently inviting us to become someone new?

That question has been sitting with me for months now.
I don't have all the answers. I suspect I never will.

But I do know this: every meaningful season of my life has asked me to let go of certainty and choose courage instead.

If you're walking through a season of change yourself, I hope you'll remember this:
You don't have to have it all figured out.
Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is simply take the next step... and trust that it is enough.

Thank you, Brené, for planting seeds all those years ago that continue to grow in ways I never could have imagined.
And thank you to each of you who has walked alongside me—and continues to do so—as I keep becoming. ☀️

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned as a coach is this:l

Conflict is rarely just about the issue at hand.
More often, it’s about a deeper human need—to be seen, heard, valued, and understood.

When we choose curiosity over judgment and understanding over being right, we create the possibility for genuine authentic connection.

Sometimes the loudest voices are carrying the quietest pleas.

What if becoming our bravest self is not just about finding courage… but also creating the conditions for courage to grow?

I love Brené Brown’s reminder that perhaps daring leadership is also about building systems that reflect our bravest selves.

Whether it’s in our families, our friendships, our workplaces, or even within ourselves, we are always creating environments. Some invite us to armor up. Others invite us to soften, tell the truth, and grow.

When life gets hard, our instinct is sometimes to pull away. To protect ourselves. To become smaller.

But courage asks something different of us.

It asks us to stay connected.
To remain curious.
To choose compassion over certainty.
To keep showing up—even when we don’t have all the answers.

I’ve come to believe that our bravest selves aren’t who we become once we’re fearless. They’re who we’ve always been beneath the armor.

The real work is creating spaces where that person feels safe enough to come forward.

As I read these words from Brene Brown’s new book “Strong Ground “, I found myself reflecting on a lesson that has been unfolding in my own life over the past five weeks.
As I have shared , I had an unexpected accident, surgery, and 6 weeks of relying on others in ways I never imagined. I have had a great deal of time to think about what truly matters.

What I have come to understand is that purpose is not something we find once and then hold onto forever. Purpose is something we continually return to. It reveals itself in the choices we make, the values we live by, and the way we show up for one another—especially during life’s most difficult moments.

As a coach, people often assume my work is about helping others become stronger, more confident, or more successful. While that is certainly part of it, what I have learned over the years is that real transformation begins when we are willing to be honest with ourselves. When we stop performing. When we stop pretending we have it all together. When we have the courage to surrender to what is true.

This chapter has reminded me that leadership is not about having all the answers. It is about authenticity. It is about vulnerability. It is about staying grounded in our values when life doesn’t go according to plan.

My deepest gratitude to those who have helped me remember that we are not meant to do life alone.
Perhaps our purpose is not found in what we accomplish, but in how we love, serve, encourage, and walk alongside one another.
That feels like strong ground to me.

This is the dedication from Strong Ground. I'm sharing it today to say thank you to so many of you who are leading wholeheartedly in the office, the classroom, on the pitch, in the studio, or in your own community. ❤️ So many of us wake up in the morning feeling overwhelmed by a world where blus...
