How has school been for your child this year?

I saw a young boy today, who is a talented reader who gained a reading rank above the state average in the recent NAPLAN test. Upon questioning, he reported that without his Irlen glasses 😎, words move on the page, sometimes they float off the page, he sees a bright glow behind the words and he sees the gaps between the words as "tracks" throughout the text. He also experiences what is known as Visual Snow in his field of vision. These distortions were relieved when wearing his Irlen glasses. HIs mother was totally unaware 😲of these distortions that he described today, because he thought that his mother (and everybody else) experienced the same things as him, so never mentioned them to her. It is really important to ASK questions about how print looks for any child who is struggling in school.

Watch someone read for five minutes when they want to throw the book away.

They move the book closer, then further away. They shift in the chair, change the angle, put it down, pick it up again. It looks like restlessness or poor concentration.

But sometimes it's someone searching for a position where the letters, words, and numbers stand still.
