Today I screened a 5th grade boy for Irlen Syndrome. Here was a hard working boy, who was so light sensitive, and who struggled very much with reading. He seemed highly intelligent, creative, and diligent. After testing him for Irlen through a series of visual processing tests, I used colored overlays to see if his eyes were more comfortable, knowing that if his eyes felt more comfortable, his brain will calm and he will read better. The results were astonishing. When the correct overlay for his brain was placed over reading material, he sat up, read with AUTHORITY, figured out new words like a pro, beamed a smile and said, “What is this magic?!”
His momma shed tears, and I, the Irlen screener, gave thanks to God, for once again, allowing me to witness something special. As we parted ways, I said to him, “Guess what? When you read to me, it was 2 grade levels higher!”
You couldn’t make this stuff up if you tried. I truly have the best jobs!! My guess is that wonderful boy with the freckles placed on his face from God, is somewhere reading!
