If you've worked with me for any amount of time, you've probably heard me say this:

Apply what you know to what you don't know.

Most business owners get stuck because they focus on the gap.

"I've never hired a sales manager."
"I've never opened a second location."
"I've never grown a company this size."

That's true. You haven't.

But you've solved problems before.

You've hired people. You've made tough decisions. You've figured out things that seemed impossible at the time.

That's what "apply what you know to what you don't know" means.

It means you stop waiting until you have all the answers. You look at the challenge in front of you and ask, "What have I learned that can help me solve this?"

The best business owners aren't the ones with all the answers.

They're the ones who trust themselves to figure things out.

You've already built a business. You've already overcome obstacles. You've already learned lessons that most people never will.

Don't let what you don't know distract you from everything you do know.

The next step forward is usually hiding inside a lesson you've already learned.

Every stage of business asks something different from you.

In the beginning, you learn how to survive uncertainty. Then you learn leadership. Then systems. Then communication. Then how to let go of control a little without feeling like everything will fall apart.

But most long-term success actually comes from staying willing to learn.

The business challenges in front of you right now may not just be obstacles. They may be teaching you the exact skills, habits, or mindset you’ll need for the next level of growth.

So instead of only asking, “How do I get through this?”

Try asking: “What am I supposed to learn in this stage of my journey?”

I recently had the honor of serving as keynote speaker at Ethics & Excellence: Navigating Today’s Business Challenges, hosted by the Small Business Center at Mitchell Community College and the Chris William Fund for Ethics Education and Training.

We spent the day discussing what actually works in business and shared some actionable steps people could implement immediately. Thanks to the incredible panel for all their insights, and to the room full of lifelong learners who want to get better at what they do.

Grateful for the opportunity, and looking forward to more keynote speaking engagements and company retreats this summer. ☀️
