INVITE THEM

Our nonprofit clients often assume that videos are useful vehicles for presenting the scientific basis which form the foundation of their mission and programs.

Unfortunately, people’s perceptions, right or wrong, are rarely altered without an initial emotional connection to the story driving the mission: Why do you do it? Why should I care?

That’s why our first order of business in producing short videos is to evoke an emotional connection in the viewer.

Award-winning director Christopher Nolan summed it up best:

“You can’t use films to tell people what to think. It never works. People just react against it. You have be purer about it. You can’t tell them what to think… but you can invite them to feel.”

R.I.P Author Annie Dillard
April 30, 1945 – September 15, 2026

Every day is a god,
each day is a god,
and holiness holds forth in time.

I worship each god,
I praise each day splintered down,
splintered down and wrapped in time like a husk,
a husk of many colors spreading,
at dawn fast over the mountains split.

Annie Dillard, Holy the Firm

"TELL ME A STORY"

This LinkedIn post by Amanda Smith is spot-on and echoes the advice we give our clients when producing short videos: lead with stories about the people you are helping.

"A small nonprofit had to raise $3,000 for new office chairs.

It was the most "boring" appeal they'd ever written. They sent it with low expectations.

It funded in 24 hours. Why?

They didn't ask for chairs.

They asked donors to give a domestic abuse survivor a dignified, comfortable place to sit while she met with her counselor for the first time.

The story wasn't about the furniture. It was about the person who would use it. It connected a tangible, simple item to a feeling of safety and respect. It proved that there are no boring fundraising campaigns. Only boring stories."

“OUR WORK IS THE BEST MARKETING” – is what many nonprofits tell themselves. Unfortunately, that is simply not true, as evidenced by so many of our clients referring to themselves as their community’s “best kept secret.”

If you have any doubts about this, do take a minute to read about what happened a few years ago along the Texas Arkansas border when, despite a boom in renewable energy projects accompanied by positive economic growth, voters, apparently unaware of how this occurred, failed to vote for the politicians responsible.

Though the article’s emphasis is primarily politics, it’s not hard to connect the dots and conclude that a major factor in the failure of voters to reward those who delivered results was due to an assumption that the results spoke for themselves.

We finally have an answer to the age-old question: “If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?”

No… it does not.
