The payments industry isn't being tweaked by stablecoins. It's being rebuilt.
For decades, moving money meant intermediaries, clearing windows, and fees of 2-3% on cards or 6-7% on remittances, with settlement in days.
Stablecoins settle in seconds or minutes, 24/7, for cents. No weekends. No correspondent chain.
That's why Visa, Mastercard and Stripe are building stablecoins in, not fighting them. Visa is using them to prefund cross-border payouts. Mastercard bought BVNK for $1.8 billion. Stripe and Shopify are adding stablecoin checkout.
Stablecoin payments hit $482 billion in the first nine months of 2026, up 45% year over year. Stablecoin-linked card spending reached $3.9 billion, ten times a year earlier.
The disruption isn't cards disappearing tomorrow. It's the profitable middle disappearing: slow settlement, high cross-border fees, and float. When settlement is instant and cheap, the old model has nothing left to sell.
