What’s the mistake I’ve learnt the most from?

If I had to pick one, it would probably be in the early days of Virgin, growing faster than our finances could safely support.

When we launched , we were pushing everything incredibly hard. Then one day my bank manager arrived at my house and told me they would start bouncing our cheques if we went over our overdraft limit. We were suddenly frighteningly close to losing the whole company.

We survived by pulling cash in from across the Virgin businesses, but it taught me an important lesson: there is a difference between taking a bold risk and putting everything unnecessarily at risk.

Ever since, I’ve tried to protect the downside. Be ambitious, move quickly and take chances, but make sure you have a safety net.

It also taught me to surround myself with a brilliant finance team. I’m never going to be the person who understands every number. I just need to have the right team around me.
