3 Ways to Answer, “Why Did You Leave Your Last Job”.
“Why did you leave your last job?” is one of the most straightforward interview questions you’ll receive.
Asking you why you left your last job helps the employer understand you – your motivation, how you handle challenging situations, and your goals. They are interested in why you are looking for a new opportunity but also looking for any red flags that may eliminate you such as issues with bosses or struggling to meet goals.
Companies want to hire people they can rely on, and having someone leave due to seemingly arbitrary reasons isn’t ideal.

1️⃣ If you were laid off:
“My role was impacted by a broader restructuring that affected multiple teams. I’m proud of what I accomplished there. What excites me about this opportunity is the chance to bring my experience in [skill] to a company like yours that’s focused on [initiative or growth area].”
2️⃣ If the role wasn’t the right fit:
“It became clear the role and I weren’t aligned long-term as the business evolved. I reflected on the feedback and strengthened areas like [skill]. Your focus on [challenge or priority] is exactly why I’m excited about this position.”
3️⃣ If you leave for growth:
“I no longer felt challenged in my role and I enjoy taking on challenges where I can continue to learn and grow. I enjoyed working with my team and learning (xyz). What drew me to your organization is your work in [area] and how this role is positioned to drive impact.”
🚫 What NOT to Say
❌ “My boss was impossible.”
❌ “The company was a mess.”
❌ “I hated the culture.”
❌ “They didn’t know what they were doing.”
❌ Long backstories with legal details
❌ Anything that sounds bitter, defensive, or resentful
