Can a thank-you note help you stand out in a sea of candidates?

One small gesture made a huge difference for a candidate we were hiring and it could do the same for you.

When we were hiring an Account Executive for a hunter role at a company I worked for, one candidate didn’t just impress us during the interview, they followed up with a thoughtful thank-you note, referencing key points from our conversation and how they can help us succeed. In a role where communication is everything, that small gesture made them unforgettable to the hiring manager.

The hiring manager was excited and loved the candidate’s initiative, attention to detail, and professionalism. That note helped them move to the next step.

🚨 Job scams are becoming more sophisticated — and more convincing than ever.

I have been in many conversations with my colleagues, and we are sickened by the job scams we continue to see every week. The one way we can help is to share awareness and guidance on what to do.

Fake recruiters. Ghost jobs. Gmail accounts pretending to be corporate recruiters. “ATS resume rewrite” scams. WhatsApp outreach. AI-generated messaging that looks legitimate at first glance.

And unfortunately, stressed and hopeful job seekers are often the target.

I hear all the time from my clients that they don’t know what to say when reaching out to people to start conversations.

But here’s the secret: the right message turns strangers into supporters and opens doors you didn’t even know existed.

Here are 3 connection scripts that warm things up without being pushy:

1️⃣ The Experience Ask
👉 “Hi [Name], I admire your work in [industry]. I’m exploring new roles and would love to hear about your experience at [Company]. Would you be open to a quick chat? Thanks!”

2️⃣ The Guidance Seeker

- Day 5: Thank them for connecting + ask one thoughtful question.
- 1 week later: Share a relevant article or insight.
- 1 - 2 weeks later: Invite them for a quick informational chat if they’re open.

The difference between a “meh” message and one that gets a reply? Personalization. Here are 3 quick ways to make your outreach feel genuine:

POLL RESULTS are in! It isn’t enough to share a poll unless you can share the results and provide some insights. That is what we are doing today!

QUESTION: Would you take a contract position in today’s market?

Here’s what you said:

✅ 80% — Yes, strategically
✅ 10% — Already have
✅ 10% — Only if desperate

There was a time when contract roles felt like a last resort, something you accepted while waiting for the “real job.” But the market has changed… and so has the strategy.

I’ve personally taken several roles that were originally supposed to be short-term contracts.

Each time, the organization ended up hiring me full-time.

WHY? Because I was curious to learn, showed the value I provided and positioned myself as someone they didn’t want to lose.

When approached intentionally, contract work isn’t temporary, it is a door to a new opportunity.

You’re now inside the organization where decisions are made. You have direct access to all departments, teams, and managers.

Contract roles can:

- Get your foot in the door
- Expand your skill set
- Grow your network
- Create income while you continue your search

But here’s where most people miss the opportunity. They do the job they were assigned and only the job they were assigned.

Let’s flip the script. If your goal is to turn a contract into a permanent position, you must work differently:

🔹 Have conversations with leaders beyond your direct manager
🔹 Learn what other departments do and where gaps exist
🔹 Volunteer for projects that stretch you
🔹 Take initiative without being asked
🔹 Solve problems before they’re escalated
🔹 Make yourself so valuable that letting you go feels inconvenient
🔹You get to test drive and see if it is a place you want to stay.

You might be thinking, well they are only budgeted for 6 months. Here is what I know:

- That budget can change in 6 months
- If they truly are only set for a specific time frame, you still have the opportunity to build strong relationships, learn new skills and showcase your value.
- You now have recent experience and connections who could be the people who connect you with your long-term position.

Contracting isn’t a step backward. For many professionals right now, it’s the smartest strategic move available.
