The first division features two separate burn rooms connected by a hallway, with each room opening into the hall. This setup gives instructors the ability to demonstrate how horizontal ventilation can rapidly spread fire across a division when proper door control isn’t maintained.
You can also allow smoke and unburned particulates to accumulate in the hallway, creating conditions to demonstrate how a backdraft environment can develop and what happens when that front door is opened.
Move upstairs and you’ll find one large compartment with a roof opening, giving you the ability to incorporate vertical ventilation and watch how it changes fire and smoke behavior.

Which one would you use?
Both modes show the convection currents coming from the stairwells—but look at how differently they present the environment.
Does one give you more detail?
Does one wash out the screen more than the other?
What information are you actually looking for?
Each TIC mode has a purpose. Sometimes you're using the camera for situational awareness. Other times, you're using that information to help make a decision.
Knowing how to operate a TIC is one thing. Understanding what the image is telling you is another.

Observation is your last chance at preparation.

Before you make entry, what is the building telling you?

What’s the smoke telling you? What color is it? How fast is it moving? Is it turbulent? What heat signatures are showing up on your TIC?

These are all things we need to slow down, recognize, and process before crossing the threshold.

The fireground isn’t the place to see these indicators for the first time. Get the reps in during training so recognition becomes second nature when it matters most.

During delivery, we run through our Train-the-Trainer demonstration using one of our seasoned demo props. We want our customers to see firsthand how these units operate after repeated burns—not just when they're brand new.
