New York’s Bottle Bill didn’t happen overnight. It came about in 1982 after more than a decade of debate over how to reduce litter across the state. As beverage containers became more common in public spaces, lawmakers, residents, and environmental advocates pushed for a better solution.
The result was a deposit system that still shapes how New Yorkers recycle bottles and cans today.
