Monroe County / WM ecopark

Monroe County / WM ecopark The ecopark is an innovative partnership between Monroe County and Waste Management to provide a "one stop drop off" for residential recycling.

Monroe County and WM have several innovative recycling partnerships including the ecopark, a one stop residential drop off for hard to handle recyclables, and the Monroe County Recycling Center, the primary processing facility for curbside recyclables. This page provides resources on diversion of materials from landfills, including waste reduction, reuse, and recycling options in Monroe County.

Whether you’re spring cleaning or just clearing out old or broken devices, remember: it’s illegal to throw electronics in the trash. The good news? You can recycle them free of charge at many convenient locations throughout our community. Check out our website for a list of free drop off locations and acceptable materials https://www.monroecounty.gov/ecopark-electronics

Check out this great new video from NYS Department of Environmental Conservation all about what happens to your waste beyond the bin! Every community has unique solid waste infrastructure, and here in Monroe County, our integrated system focuses on reducing waste, increasing recycling and reuse, and managing materials in an environmentally responsible way.

You can get an up-close look at our local system at the Mill Seat Landfill Open House on Thursday, June 25 from 3–7 p.m. Learn how waste is managed, how landfill gas is converted into renewable energy, and what happens to recyclables after collection.

Some things we share in common with communities across New York State:

⬇️Goals to reduce waste and preserve our limited disposal capacity
✅Diverting materials through reuse and recycling programs
❌Keeping dangerous items like lithium batteries and vapes out of recycling and disposal systems to protect workers, equipment, and public safety

Planning a Memorial Day picnic? ☀️🍉

Here’s a quick reminder of what items can and cannot be recycled after the celebration. ♻️ As grilling season kicks off, please remember that propane tanks of any size DO NOT belong in your recycle bin, as they can cause explosions and fires in trucks and facilities! You can safely recycle them at the ecopark for free, no appointment necessary.

When it comes to summer festivities, skip the disposables when you can and choose reusable dishes, cups, and serving ware to help reduce waste!

Small swaps can make a big difference.

Warm weather = project season 🎨

Before you grab that paint or stain, keep these tips in mind to reduce waste and protect the environment:

🛒 Buy only what you need
♻️ Share or recycle the rest (not in your bin!)

Have leftovers? Offer them to friends, neighbors, or Buy Nothing groups—you’d be surprised who can use them!

Then recycle properly through PaintCare drop-offs at stores like Sherwin Williams & Ace Hardware (no appointment required), mobile collections, or an ecopark HHW appointment.
