Tomorrow! Medication & sharps mobile collection event:

📆Wednesday, September 9, 4pm to 6pm
📍Town of Clarkson, NY Highway Dept., 3623 Lake Rd N.

Acceptable items include pills & liquid medication, prescription & over the counter medication, empty medicine bottles, ointments & creams, sprays & inhalers, EpiPens, and sharps & syringes. This collection is free and open to all residents of Monroe County; no appointment is required.

We are excited to partner with to provide a mobile Household Hazardous Waste collection next month!

📆Saturday, October 3
🕐7:45 am to 12pm (advance appointment required!)
📍Town of Irondequoit DPW

🎨☢️⛽️With an appointment, any Monroe County resident can properly dispose of up to 30 gallons of chemicals such as paint, automotive fluids, fertilizers, household cleaners and pool chemicals at no charge.

💉Residents may also bring medical sharps and syringes in an approved sharps containers or a sturdy alternative, such as a laundry detergent bottle. All containers should be capped and labeled "SHARPS."

🚬Vaping devices, including v**e pens and electronic ci******es are also accepted for proper disposal and should be contained in a zip-type plastic bag.

If tomorrow is your garbage and recycling pickup day, please wait until the morning to put out your totes. This will help prevent windblown litter and totes from ending up in the street.

The US National Weather Service Buffalo NY has officially issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of Monroe County.

To stay safe during these weather conditions, we're recommending the following tips:

• Avoid unnecessary travel to allow emergency and utility crews to work.

• Treat any dark traffic signals as a 4-way stop sign.

• Do not touch downed power lines.

• If using back-up generators, be sure they are operating outdoors or are ventilated safely outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide.

• Check on elderly friends, family, and neighbors.

• Have emergency supplies ready in the event of a power outage: food, water, flashlights, firewood, and medication.

• If you rely on electricity to operate medical equipment, make alternative arrangements.

• Do not leave candles unattended.

• Bring pets inside and secure garbage totes, patio furniture, and outdoor items.

Did you know? Paint can be recycled at a nearby store!

Many local retailers—including Ace Hardware, Sherwin-Williams, and PPG Paints—participate in the PaintCare program and accept leftover paint and stain for recycling without an appointment!

🚚PaintCare also offers free pickup services for businesses with larger quantities of paint.

📆Household hazardous waste materials like paint & chemicals require an advance appointment which can be made online at https://www.monroecounty.gov/ecopark
⏰The early bird gets the worm! Coming before 10am is your best bet for a shorter wait.

Have you heard of Repair Cafes? At these free community events, you can bring broken household items and work alongside skilled volunteers to repair them. Whether it's clothing, small appliances, bicycles, furniture, toys, electronics, or other everyday items, Repair Cafés help keep usable products out of the landfill while teaching valuable repair skills.

We’re fortunate to have several active Repair Cafés right here in our community. If you have something that's broken, consider bringing it to a local Repair Café before replacing it. You might be surprised what can be fixed!

Doing some end of summer clean up? Keep in mind that propane tanks, helium tanks, and fire extinguishers DO NOT belong in your curbside recycling bin, but can be brough to the ecopark for safe recycling during normal business hours, no appointment necessary.

Metal is highly recyclable, but those metal chains, small appliances, and propane tanks DO NOT belong in your curbside recycling bin! These items can cause injury to workers and damage to recycling equipment.

🥫Only metal cans and foil should be recycled curbside.

⛓️🔩🗄️Many other metal items can be recycled at local scrap metal recycling facilities, where you may even be paid for items, such as:
ALPCO Recycling
Metalico Rochester
Upstate Shredding

The ecopark also accepts bulky metal items, but please note that this is a self-serve scrap metal recycling bin and residents should be prepared to unload their own materials over and into a dumpster. We highly recommend bringing someone else with you if assistance is needed here.
