We started small as two families and we are proud that Bethel Heights has stayed in the Casteel-Dudley-Webb family since our beginning in 1977. We have now welcomed grandchildren, spouses, and non-family employees to Bethel Heights. Some of us have changed roles. And some of us are stepping up in the business, taking over where our family began. Through it all, we have strived to allow our wines t

o show their sense of place, speak to the history of our vineyard, and tell the story of our family. Our Legacy Blocks of own-rooted vines, planted between 1977 and 1979 before the advent of phylloxera in Oregon, include 23 acres of Pinot noir (Pommard and Wädenswil clones), and 4.5 acres of Wente clone Chardonnay – all still producing fascinating wines. Later plantings from the ‘90s and beyond include many of the new “Dijon clones” of Pinot noir and Chardonnay, all on phylloxera-resistant rootstock. We’ve grown our estate vineyards gradually for more than thirty-five years, from the original 14 acres planted in 1977 to over 100 acres in 2021. Three-fourths of our plantings are Pinot noir, with Chardonnay expanding as our primary white variety. All three of our estate vineyards lie within the Eola-Amity Hills AVA and are viewable from our tasting room.

There’s a very special place here on the estate, dividing the Lewman and Justice vineyards, where a long row of tall, shady poplar trees was planted years ago by Dennis Lewman. There’s no better place for leafgazing and contemplation, and for asking the deep, probing questions. Allow the Casteel sisters to demonstrate….

You don’t have to be reserved by nature, of course. You can be super gregarious! The life of the party. Just call ahead (especially) if you want to sit under the wisteria.

Outtakes from a couple days at Bethel Heights. Farmer Bob stops to say howdy. Kate entertains a group at the winery. Chips the goat professes his love and requests a snack. Peeping through the library windows. Katy the gardener’s gorgeous arrangements. Poplars in the wind.

2025 Estate Pinot has left the barrel (Elvis-style) and entered the tank, ready to be bottled. Allow Jaime to demonstrate the distinct percussive thump of a freshly-emptied barrel.

Would you be down for a picnic in the poplars? Please comment if you would. We’re not great at surmising such things. We’re just a coupla real poplar gals.

I find the best antidote to chronic doomscrolling is a powerful dose of bloomstrolling, and there’s really no better place for that than Bethel Heights. Wash it down with some Estate Chardonnay and call me in the morning. You’ll be right as rain.
