A family and a place, bound together from one generation to the next, forging an enduring tradition, a timeless classic. The bonds of love and time.
(501)

We started small as two families and we are proud that Bethel Heights has stayed in the Casteel-Dudley-Webb family since our beginning in 1977. We have now welcomed grandchildren, spouses, and non-family employees to Bethel Heights. Some of us have changed roles. And some of us are stepping up in the business, taking over where our family began. Through it all, we have strived to allow our wines to show their sense of place, speak to the history of our vineyard, and tell the story of our family. Our Legacy Blocks of own-rooted vines, planted between 1977 and 1979 before the advent of phylloxera in Oregon, include 23 acres of Pinot noir (Pommard and Wädenswil clones), and 4.5 acres of Wente clone Chardonnay – all still producing fascinating wines. Later plantings from the ‘90s and beyond include many of the new “Dijon clones” of Pinot noir and Chardonnay, all on phylloxera-resistant rootstock. We’ve grown our estate vineyards gradually for more than thirty-five years, from the original 14 acres planted in 1977 to over 100 acres in 2021. Three-fourths of our plantings are Pinot noir, with Chardonnay expanding as our primary white variety. All three of our estate vineyards lie within the Eola-Amity Hills AVA and are viewable from our tasting room.

I asked Ben if he was already missing working with the legacy blocks this year. He does, but he feels good about the replanting. No phantom limbs in our future.

That’s not our accomplice in the wood chipper, no. That’s the old flat block vines, beginning their new era as compost. Join me in saluting these heroes one last time…for serving us so well for so long.

Every experience with our Beyond the Blocks club members is memorable and inspiring. We’re so thankful for every one of them. Chef Greg McPhee knocked it out of the park once again.

Cover crop coming up in the new plantings. Legumes lead the way!

Ben’s reflects on the 2026 growing season and seems pretty confident about the wines.

Extra special (post) harvest lunch today with a visit from founder Marilyn and a favorite old recipe she used to make the crew. Feeling quite fortunate to have a long history and the generations of talented people who’ve shared in it all.

We all know bigger isn’t always better, except when it comes to our annual magnum sale! Save 25% on any large-format bottles until December 15th.

10/16/2026

Morning is best:
1. Coveted employee parking spaces under cherry tree.
2. Kate shocked to see me before noon.
3. Disappointed goat (no treats in pocket)
4. Barrels awaiting their spa treatments
5. Coffee under the wisteria.
