For survivors, all investments are meaningful.

I learned this in 2005 when I was the first hire on a team that didn't exist yet.

When Allstate first approached NNEDV about economic empowerment, I joined as the first member of the economic empowerment team. We conceptualized the Education and Job Training Assistance Fund. I built the case for it, administered it, developed the economic empowerment curriculum and piloted it.

13 pilot programs. $500 to $1,000 in survivors' hands. More than $2 million awarded by the Allstate Foundation.

But the numbers aren't what I remember most. It's the applications.

Survivors applying to become realtors, dental assistants, nursing assistants and contractors. Taking courses. Going back to school. Getting their degrees translated so their education counted here.

They already had the plan. The fund opened the door.

That's still the work today: investing in survivors' and advocates' own plans, including the businesses they build.

Federal victim services funding has narrowed, and the programs you support are meeting the same demand with less. Many of you are answering the way strong funders always have: with capacity-building dollars and flexibility.

But there’s something that often goes unsaid. When every conversation feels like it could shape future funding, grantees are less likely to bring their hardest challenges to the people who fund them. Nearly 6 in 10 nonprofit leaders say they hold back from being fully honest with their funders.

📊 Women own more than 14 million U.S. businesses, generating $2.7 trillion in revenue.
📊 One in two social enterprises worldwide is led by a woman.
