Like many invasive plants, garlic mustard was originally introduced for its edible and medicinal properties. An unintended consequence of this is that it has since become one of the earliest aggressive threats to native spring ephemerals in woodland ecosystems. It releases allelopathic chemicals that inhibit the germination of native seeds and disrupt the underground mycorrhizal networks and soils.

By altering the soil chemistry and plant communities, garlic mustard can affect decomposers and predatory insects—organisms that help regulate tick populations. There’s also evidence that these disruptions may influence the microbiomes of the ticks themselves, potentially increasing the spread of pathogens responsible for Lyme disease.

The good news is that you can help slow its spread. Because garlic mustard has a biennial life cycle, mechanical removal is an effective method for managing small patches. Hand-pulling before the plant sets seed can make a real difference.

And there’s a bonus: it’s edible! Just ensure proper identification before consuming. The younger leaves, especially from first-year plants, are excellent for making pesto. Just toss everything into a food processor:

• 4 cups chopped garlic mustard
• ½ cup parmesan cheese (or nutritional yeast for a vegan option)
• ½ cup pine nuts (or sunflower seeds)
• ¼ cup olive oil
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Blend until smooth, and you’ve turned an invasive plant into something delicious.

What else can you forage in your backyard?

Our Earth Day visit to Greensboro Elementary was a huge success!
Thanks to Empire’s support and materials, we spent the day working with Pre-K3 through 5th grade—over 80 students in total—teaching, demonstrating, and planting trees together. The excitement and engagement from the students made it an unforgettable experience, and it meant a lot to hear how appreciative the staff was.
Each student got hands-on with the entire planting process—learning about tree parts, helping prepare the roots, digging, backfilling, mulching, and even giving their class tree its first watering. They also learned the names of their trees, which made it even more special.
By the end of the day, the kids felt proud of what they accomplished and excited about what they learned—and we were honored to be voted one of the favorite stations!
A great day all around 🌱

🌿 Think planting trees is enough? Think again!
Tiny reforestation plots are under constant attack—vines, invasive plants, and dry spells all threaten young trees. Without proper care, even the best-planned projects can fail.
Here’s how we give trees a fighting chance:
✂️ Cut aggressive vines
💧 Water during droughts
🌱 Remove invasive species
With the right TLC, even small plots can turn into thriving forests that wildlife and communities love.
At Empire Landscape, we help every project grow strong—and last for generations. Who else loves watching trees grow? 🌳💚

🌿 Meet the Green Climber remote-controlled forestry mower! 🌿
At Empire Landscape, this compact but powerful machine has become an essential tool in our work managing non-native invasive species. At just four feet wide with a very low center of gravity, it navigates tight spaces and hilly areas with ease—and with less soil compaction than a human foot, it helps protect soil health.
With two trained operators and a third in training, we’re continuing to expand its use into new environments after it proved very effective on dense bamboo stands and large shrubs.
The remote-controlled Green Climber allows operators to remain at a safe distance while significantly reducing the risk of rollover on steep slopes.
We are proud to use this innovative equipment to restore natural landscapes.
