Another milestone for Empire! 🎉
We’re proud to share that we have been recertified as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) in Maryland.
Empire is also currently DBE certified in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., with Delaware coming soon! 💪🏽
It’s another step forward for our company and a reflection of the continued growth and opportunities ahead.

🌿 Fall is a great time to tackle any unwanted vines and shrubs!

At Empire, we implement a targeted cut stem approach to treat these woody invasives.
• 🌱 How it works: We cut the plant close to the ground and apply a small amount of herbicide directly to the fresh-cut stump.
• 💧 Why use it: This method can help reduce overall herbicide use and the chance of it drifting onto nearby plants.
• 🍂 Bonus of fall: Many plants are naturally sending energy back down to their roots this time of year, making for a highly effective treatment.

Safety Day at Empire Landscape! 🦺
On July 30, our Division 1 and Bio Crews from Division 2 spent the day going over important safety topics and getting some hands-on training.
We covered vehicle and equipment safety, yard safety, hand and power tools, emergency procedures, and more. It was a great refresher and a good reminder of how important it is to stay aware and look out for one another on the job every day.
The goal is simple — make sure everyone has the knowledge and training to do their job safely and make it home at the end of the day.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the training and to all of our employees who took part!

Brentwood Pocket Park – Completed August 3, 2026

This summer, Empire Landscape completed improvements at Brentwood Pocket Park by installing a new drainage system along the park’s main pathway.

The pathway had experienced heavy flooding in the past because of poor drainage, so HexPavers were installed to help improve drainage and create a stronger, more durable surface. The pavers are made from 100% recycled PPE plastic and will help keep the pathway in better shape for years to come.

The work included preparing and compacting the existing pathway, adding drainage rock, installing and securing the HexPavers, and filling them with pea gravel. Drainage rock was also added along both sides of the pathway to help with water runoff.

We recently celebrated 20 years of Empire Landscape with our amazing team.

This milestone is a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and teamwork that have helped make Empire what it is today. We’re grateful for everyone who has been part of our journey and for everything our employees do each and every day.

As we celebrate this special milestone, we also want to remember our friend and colleague, William (Bill) Gahs, who was a valued part of the Empire family. We’re thankful for the time we had with Bill and for all he contributed to our team. He will be deeply missed. 🤍

Like many invasive plants, garlic mustard was originally introduced for its edible and medicinal properties. An unintended consequence of this is that it has since become one of the earliest aggressive threats to native spring ephemerals in woodland ecosystems. It releases allelopathic chemicals that inhibit the germination of native seeds and disrupt the underground mycorrhizal networks and soils.

By altering the soil chemistry and plant communities, garlic mustard can affect decomposers and predatory insects—organisms that help regulate tick populations. There’s also evidence that these disruptions may influence the microbiomes of the ticks themselves, potentially increasing the spread of pathogens responsible for Lyme disease.

The good news is that you can help slow its spread. Because garlic mustard has a biennial life cycle, mechanical removal is an effective method for managing small patches. Hand-pulling before the plant sets seed can make a real difference.

And there’s a bonus: it’s edible! Just ensure proper identification before consuming. The younger leaves, especially from first-year plants, are excellent for making pesto. Just toss everything into a food processor:

• 4 cups chopped garlic mustard
• ½ cup parmesan cheese (or nutritional yeast for a vegan option)
• ½ cup pine nuts (or sunflower seeds)
• ¼ cup olive oil
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Blend until smooth, and you’ve turned an invasive plant into something delicious.
