A few months ago, we introduced you to a tiny Black Angus heifer who had been abandoned by her mother on the farm.

Today, we’re so happy to share an update with you - Sweet Pea is thriving! 🌿

From fragile beginnings to full of energy and curiosity, she’s now running freely around the farm, healthy, strong, and clearly loving life.

It’s a reminder of what a bit of care and consistency can do.

As autumn draws to a close and winter settles into the Durbanville Wine Valley, the vineyards at Mellish Family Vineyards enter a quieter season. The leaves have fallen, the harvest is behind us, and the focus shifts beneath the surface.

This time of year is all about building healthy soils for the seasons ahead. Between the vineyard rows, we've planted a cover crop of oats and barley to increase organic matter, while radish helps break up and aerate the soil naturally. On our bush vines, straw bales are added to further enrich the soil and improve moisture retention.

While the vines may appear dormant above ground, there's plenty of work happening below the surface. Healthy soil is the foundation of great vineyards, and great vineyards are where exceptional wines begin.
