So… What’s Our Story? Pull Up a Chair.
So, where do I begin? December 2012. The month of festive cheer. Also the month I got retrenched. Perfect timing, right?
To add a little extra spice to the situation, I had just moved into a new place where the rent was higher than before. Suddenly my brain was doing Olympic level mental gymnastics trying to figure out how I was going to survive. Rent, car instalments, petrol, food, electricity… the bills were lining up like they were waiting for a payday that no longer existed.
I’ve always trusted the Lord (but let’s be honest, even faith has its “please hold” moments). I fired off what felt like 300 CVs in December alone and got exactly zero responses. Not even a polite “thanks, but no thanks.”
Then it hit me.
I love talking to people. In fact, I talk so much that people regularly struggle to get a word in. Lightbulb moment. Recruitment!
Was I terrified? Absolutely. Had I ever done recruitment before? Not at all. Did that stop me? Clearly not.
After two weeks of online courses and asking everyone in the industry many (okay, probably too many) questions, Pro-Stop Recruitment was born in February 2013. I took the little money I had, printed business cards, built a website on Wix, and started creating all my “grown-up business” things like contracts, application forms, CV templates… the whole lot.
Then came the real challenge: getting clients.
Back then, Google wasn’t king. The Yellow Pages were. Every night I would sit and hunt for companies, build call lists, and practice my sales pitch for the next morning like I was rehearsing for a stage performance.
I’ll never forget my first job spec. A steel manufacturing company needing a General Worker.
The commission wasn’t massive, but you know what? It paid my car instalment and put food on the table. That win felt HUGE. And just like that, the cycle started again.
Fast forward two years – a friend joined the business and the client base started growing.
Fast forward another two years – another friend joined. Suddenly this little survival plan was becoming something real.
Then in February 2021, we took over the clients of an IT company and changed our name to Pro-Careers Recruitment Services. Exciting? Yes. Terrifying? Also yes. We had never focused on IT before, so it was back to learning mode: online courses, Google searches, YouTube videos, and trying to understand things like programming languages, frameworks, architecture, methodologies, and technologies that initially sounded like a foreign language.
Today, Pro-Careers is a team of five, each specialising in our own niche markets. We have good days. We have bad days. We laugh a lot. We argue sometimes. But most importantly, we genuinely enjoy what we do and we always have each other’s backs.
Would I change the journey? Absolutely not. I’ve learned more than I ever imagined, met incredible clients and candidates, and many of them are still part of my story today. The best part? Placing someone in their dream job. That feeling never gets old. It’s the ultimate high.
My favourite saying is, “Everything happens for a reason.” We don’t always understand the reason at the time, but it’s a journey we’re meant to take and one we have to trust.
And that… is our story.
