What even is my life?! I will forever be grateful for the wildly wonderful things I get to do in my work. What a bluddy dream! Thank you Byron Bay Guide & What’s On and Byron Writers Festival - and bluddy well done Zali Spinner!

Now…I must sleep.

Lived experience can be an extraordinary catalyst for change. But too often, advocates are expected to keep proving their authority by returning to the most painful parts of their lives.

The first interview becomes another interview. Then a panel, a podcast, a fundraiser and a social post. Before long, you’re publicly recognised for what happened to you, while years of research, leadership and systems knowledge remain almost invisible.

Ethical storytelling is not only about making an individual disclosure safer. It is also about building a pathway beyond disclosure.

That means helping lived-experience advocates become recognised as policy thinkers, campaign strategists, researchers, leaders and subject-matter experts.

It means investing in white papers, data, submissions, coalitions and creative activations.

It also means making space for a life beyond advocacy. Friends, nature, hobbies, rest and conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with reform necessary distractions from the work.

Your story might be where your advocacy began. It does not have to be the central focus of your work forever.

Stories we are damn proud of.

Earlier this year, O&C travelled across Australia to interview and photograph some of the most extraordinary humans we have ever met.

Future leaders. Social impact innovators. Academics. Scientists. People using their intelligence, curiosity and life’s work to protect our oceans, bushfire management, strengthening our communities, advancing research and help build a better future for Australia.

They are some of the country’s brightest minds. But moreover they’re some of the most thoughtful and kind humans.

To mark a decade of impact, O&C curated One Thousand, a zine featuring 12 Westpac Scholars and offering a glimpse into the wider community of 1,000 scholars supported through more than $100 million in investment by the Westpac Scholars.

A huge thank you to Amy Lyden for her wisdom and trust, and to Kate Semrau for her extraordinary dedication and fun in bringing this project to life.

I have spent many years trying to figure out how we navigate algorithms and a media landscape obsessed with trauma p**n, alongside, our clients working in the not for profit and social enterprise space dependent on lived experience testimony…and the fallout when people have to relive their darkest moments to advocate.

It’s such a difficult tension as a publicist. We know what works for media, but it isn’t always the right thing to do.

We never want to overstep with our pitching, to be too instructive and yet when it comes to turning a light on people who have lived through domestic violence, experienced homelessness or navigated the throws of addiction, we have a moral duty to protect how their stories are told.

Thanks to many generous journalists, editors, producers, survivors and advocates…as well as many many hours of conversation, I’ve been building an ethical storytelling framework that supports us as publicists to understand the risks we need to mitigate, that help advocacy organisations understand both the protections they need to put in place for their clients, and to help advocacy organisations understand the expectations across media.

This has resulted in a set of guidelines for advocates, publicists, media organisations and journalists to protect those who are brave enough to share their stories.

It has been such an honour to investigate these ideas. I’m so grateful for the time that so many people have given me that have informed this body of work and I’m really excited to bring this to the stage at Global Impact Summit alongside two women whose work I really admire and who’s curious and kind thinking is put to work every day telling stories across some of Australia’s biggest platforms.

I would love to see you at Global Impact Summit. I’ll be chatting with The Imperfects exec producer and partner at Bridget Northeast and Laura Francis-Mathers managing editor at Sunrise on Thursday 6 August.

See you there?

What even is this beautiful life?

So damn grateful to have the opportunity to bring gloriously clever humans to this region, to work alongside kind, intelligent and motivated people, and to live in this region of abundantly nourishing nature.

The world - climate and politics in particular - can wholeheartedly break your heart some days …but today, I’m in the ‘we are gonna be alright’ energy.

We are so damn lucky.

Sick of being ‘the best kept secret’ in your industry?!

You gotta put yourself out there. 50–80% of media wins come from pitching. Often a cold email to an email someone found online, scratching around for a way in.

You don’t need to be the expert-iest expert, or the biggest badass in your niche, you just need good ideas, robust opinions, and a sprinkling of self belief.

So let’s stop thinking self-promotion is gross.

And start thinking of it as an essential business tool, a lever to share your work with those who need it.

Sadly, too many brilliant, capable founders are sitting on the sidelines because they’re scared of looking ‘too much’.

But I say, go and be your best ‘too much’ version of yourself, and learn how to pitch your biz to media.

Many change makers spend years refining solutions but struggle to share them publicly.

You spend years researching it.
Living it.
Building it.
Testing it.

But if the people who need your ideas never hear you, if the decision makers and funders never see you in media, your impact is limited.

Even though it feels bluddy gross to self promote. Visibility isn’t vanity, it’s an essential part of the change making work.

Learn how to share your ideas with the people who can amplify them.

Hack Your Own PR is 50% off until June 30.
