Happy Small Business Month 🎉

October has been a HUGE month ... I've caught up with clients from Brisbane to country NSW, Zoomed my little heart out, road tripped, spoken at events, presented, learned, been inspired, laughed, connected, grown, shared, and LIVED!

The bit that's stuck with me most? Getting your hands busy making something is a giant exhale for an overbusy brain (mine included 🙈). Business owners wear every hat going, so a little space to breathe, connect and be inspired is worth protecting! 🌟

What lit YOU up this October? Tell me in the comments 👇

Did you tap 'agree' on Meta's updated business terms without reading them? Plenty of us did 👀

Here's your weekly digital marketing update, uncomplified ... with what actually matters for small business owners (details in the comments) 👇

💛 Kylie's thoughts…
WowZers, that terms update is a calm cup of tea moment; AI tools have been crawling public websites for ages, so Meta is offering a more direct path to the same place. I'd still pop that robots.txt note to your web person this week, coz it takes minutes and puts your preference on record. And I'm here for the algorithm chat; I'm off to tell mine I want more ukulele videos 🎸

When you Google something, you often see a box of AI writing at the very top, above all the website links, that's the AI Overview ... and Google just changed it (again!) so here are 5 new things you need to know about that!

Here’s what’s different in that box:

1. More links to websites, sitting inside the writing and higher up the page.
2. A “best places to go” list. When only a few trusted websites cover a topic, Google names them and says why they’re useful.
3. Lists of news-style articles, now showing in more countries.
4. Small pictures next to related articles.
5. Names you can click on some videos. They take people to a Google page about that creator first, not to their website.

OMGoodness, that’s a lot of new ways for people to find your business! BUT, this bit's important! Google has a free report (called Search Console) that shows how many people visit your website from Google. It can’t show you which visitors came from these new bits yet. Google says it’ll add more details “over time”.

Until then, ask people how they found you. Pop “How did you find me?” on your enquiry form, with options like “Google’s AI box”, “ChatGPT” and “A friend told me”. It takes just a few minutes to set up, and you’ll know what you need to know.

A clear answer on your website page plus a clear question on your form; that’s how we uncomplify this one 💛

Which page on your website would you want Google to link to first? Your home page? A sales page or product page? Your About page? Tell me!👇

Do you have an AI policy for your business? 🤔

Mine's been on my website for a while now, and this week I gave it a thorough update (AI moves SO fast, and so do the tools, the laws and my own habits!).

I can't take all the credit for the idea though; my inspo came from the brilliant Mari Smith and her generative AI policy, which was inspired by the Responsible AI Manifesto for Marketing and Business from the Marketing AI Institute. Women (and wise teams) lifting each other up, love it! 💛

Here's what's in my refreshed version:
• Where we use AI, and where we don't
• How your information stays private, and why it never trains AI models
• Our promises on ethics, accessibility and the planet
• A brand new FAQ section

I've also set a reminder to review it every 6 months, so it keeps up with how we're using AI in our work. Uncomplifying this stuff really does matter, because your clients and customers want to know how AI is being used with their information. It helps with TRUST, given the amount of AI SLOP we're seeing E V E R Y W H E R E - in our newsfeeds, on websites, blogs, emails, newsletters, crikey it really is everywhere!

The link to mind is in my profile.

We all created one during our SHINE Online session last week, feeding our AI platforms a template I'd created, their HELLO Busiess Brains, and voila - new AI policy that was theirs to edit as they wished!

So tell me... do you have an AI policy, and are you updating it regularly? Pop your answer in the comments 👇 (no judgement, we're all learning!)

Quick test for you.

Open a private browser and search your service plus your suburb, like 'Reliable electrician in Geelong' or 'Best dog groomer Brisbane'.

Are you listed on the first page of this Google search? Are you mentioned in the AI overview snippet?

Most small business owners have never checked, and when they finally do, it's a bit of a wake up call.

It's rarely about the quality of the business. Although your Google reviews do play a huge part in your ranking ... but it also comes down to a few missing trust signals Google needs before it'll recommend you, things like consistent directory listings, a complete Google Business Profile and FAQs that answer your ideal customer/clients exact questions. 🔍

The good news is you can start fixing that today.

Here’s your weekly digital marketing update - uncomplified … with what really matters right now for business owners and marketers (see comments) 👇

💛 Kylie’s thoughts…
Customers are finding answers everywhere at the moment; inside ChatGPT, inside Google and in the ads popping up on FB and IG! Your voice and your offers belong to YOU, so make sure your website says clearly what you do and who you help, coz all of these tools lean on it (Mazzy and I just recorded a new podcast episode on excactly this, on Friday - so stay tuned, we'll let you know when it's out!).
Here’s your homework (it’s quick!); ask ChatGPT or Claude the question your dream client would ask and see if you turn up 🙈 What did it say?

Last year in Puerto Vallarta I stood in front of a wall of skeletons having the best bluddy beach day of their afterlife, under a banner that said “Sonríe, estás en Vallarta” (smile, you’re in Vallarta). Bright sunset, cobbled street, a skeleton taking a selfie, so initially I didn't even notice the wooden door which was bang smack in the middle of that fabulous street art mural ... covered in sh*tty tags.

Fast forward to Paris a couple of months ago and I couldn’t stop looking UP, I was just so freakin' astounded at how HIGH the graffiti goes ... and how they're not getting rid of it! So of course I had to do some digging (once a journo, always a journo 😝).

It turns out, Paris cleaning crews scrub about 650 sqm of tags every single day, which costs over 6 million euros a year, so the investment into the cleaning up of tags is massive. BUT the clean up crews are only allowed to clean up to 4m. Anything higher is the building owner’s problem, which is why so much of it sits untouched up near the rooflines. And some of those buildings are HUGE and most of those buildings are hundreds of years old ... they're works of art in themselves, so why would the taggers want to mess up such gorgeous historic ART? Awful 😣

What really stuck with me from Mexico is what we were told they do with the young graffiti-ers. When they catch kids tagging, instead of locking them up, they put them into an art program, then give them a wall of their own. That urge that gets people tagging in the first place - the urge to be seen or recognised for their bravery (when they've tagged in dangerous places), is given some skill behind it and a place to put it.

I think about that a lot in marketing. Plenty of us are tagging every wall in reach... every platform, every day, every hour... and still wondering why our engagement is sh*te and our reach is dismal. The people who get noticed found their wall, got good at their message, and kept showing up in the same spot.

BUT even the best mural needs people walking past it.

That’s where our Smart Ads Visibility System (aka SAVS) comes in. Your organic content is the wall. The system puts it in front of new audiences, warms them up with multiple types and styles of fresh content, then retargets the people who showed interest at 30, 60 and 90 days and those who visited your website ... that's visibility happening on repeat!

So how many walls are you tagging right now, and is anyone walking past?

Type SAVS below and we’ll tell you all about it 👇

1. A bright mural of skeletons relaxing on a beach under a pink and orange sunset, with a banner reading “Sonríe, estás en Vallarta”. A wooden door in the middle of the mural is covered in graffiti tags.
2. A wider view of the same Puerto Vallarta mural on a cobbled street, with a blue car parked in front.
3. Paris rooftops under a blue sky, with graffiti painted high up on a chimney wall.
4. A Paris apartment building with graffiti near the roofline and tags on the ground floor beside a street lamp.
5. A busy Paris street under a cloudy sky, lined with tall buildings.
6. A Paris street corner with a Five Guys restaurant, and graffiti on the buildings high above it.
7. A cobbled street in Puerto Vallarta lined with parked cars, with a colourful mural at the top of a stairway in the distance.
8. A cobbled street in Puerto Vallarta with a vendor’s stall under a large umbrella, a red plastic chair and a pickup truck in front of a white building. The top of a colourful sunset mural shows above the roofline behind them.
9. An AI-generated mural of a smiling woman (Kylie, founder of Hello Media) with blonde hair and a black embroidered top, surrounded by hummingbirds, ferns and tropical flowers, painted on a concrete wall beside the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
