🦠 Cross-Contamination & Mould: The Hidden Risk When Moving Homes 🏠

Are you moving into a new home? Or have you recently moved… only to find mysterious health issues, odours, dampness or mould returning?

Here’s what we’re seeing more and more of:

🔄 People unknowingly bring mould with them from a previously contaminated home, even if it “looked fine” at the time.

🏠 RTA Regulations & Mould: A Landlord’s Duty to Provide a Safe, Healthy Home

Under the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) guidelines, property owners and managers are legally responsible for ensuring that rental properties are safe, clean, and fit to live in.

🌧️ Rain Incoming? Here’s How to Prevent Mould in Your Home or Workplace 🛑

Heavy rain can lead to moisture build-up and where there’s moisture, mould often isn’t far behind. Take action before and during wet weather to protect your home and your health.

Here are 7 essential steps to reduce mould risk during rainy weather:

1. Clear Gutters, Downpipes & Foliage
Ensure all drainage is flowing properly, blocked gutters can cause leaks and overflow into walls and foundations.
Trim back or most any bushes, shrubs or trees away from the external walls for the building or home.
This allows the wind to draw moisture out of the walls and prevent moisture being retained against the wall by foliage/nature.

2. Seal Up Windows & Doors
Inspect for any gaps or cracked seals and repair them. Damp/moist air loves to sneak in through small spaces.

3. Shut the House During Rain.
Keep windows and doors closed during rainfall to prevent moisture laden air from entering the home.

4. Turn on Ceiling Fans.
Keep air circulating, especially in high risk areas like bedrooms, living spaces, and corners where air tends to stagnate. Make sure these are clean and free from dust!!

5. Use Your Air Conditioner on ‘Dry’ Mode.
This helps pull excess humidity from the air and maintain a balanced indoor environment.

6. Run Extraction Fans in Wet Areas.Turn on bathroom and laundry exhaust fans during use and for at least 30 minutes after to remove lingering moisture.💨 Even better if these are vented externally!!

7. Use Dehumidifiers Where Needed.
Especially in damp prone rooms. A consistent humidity level below 60% is a vital key to keeping mould at bay.

🌬️ Laundry Tip:
If you’re using a clothes dryer, make sure it’s vented externally where possible. Otherwise, you’re pumping hot, moist air straight into your home.

✅ BONUS TIP: Move furniture slightly away from walls to allow airflow and prevent condensation build-up behind large items.

Mould explained in Laymans terms😉

Just Imagine it’s a microscopic plant or shrub

It has a root system the embeds itself into the surface, which range from 8-10 micron in size. TINY.🔍

What you see on the surface are the leaves 🍃 of the plant.
100 of thousands of spores, just waiting to be released.

Mould has a very clever defence and survival mechanism.
If it feels threatened or attacked, it will release more spares into the atmosphere.
Kinda like one of those puff balls you stand on as a kid that releases a puff cloud💨
This is how it survives or comes back worse than it was originally.

Those spores are released into the atmosphere, which then travel throughout the home on the likes of clothing, pets or airflow.
This then allows it to find another place to embedded itself somewhere within the dwelling and call it home, waiting for those perfect conditions once again, and start all over again.

The three factors that it needs to thrive are.
1, Dust & Dirt = The soil and food sauce for the plant ( Mould)

2, A source of moisture. Either high humidity or a water leak issue. This waters the plant.
Without it, it’ll go dormant, but NOT die!
It’ll sit there patiently waiting!!!👁️

3, Heat. Because Mould doesn’t like direct sunlight due to the UV light., it relies on heat to allow it to flourish and spread.
This is why we tend to see more outbreaks during the tropical rainy season in QLD, but can also be impacted by people turning on their heating during the colder winter months.

*Remove dust & Dirt = no food source
*Remove moisture or water source = no watering of the plant and therefore dry up, not allowing it to spread.💧

IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
Mould can go into hibernation mode very easily, and lay dormant until the right conditions present themselves again and then spread, starting the process all over again.

This is why it’s super important to remediate a home properly, remove Mould the correct way and in its entirety, and ensure nothing is left behind.🧐
