Nucleus Evolution

Everyone's talking hardware. We're talking about who trains the people. Land Forces, 6 to 8 October.

16/09/2026

Three weeks until Land Forces, and it's the first time it's ever been held in WA.

We'll be in the Veteran Business Community Pavilion on Level 2, Stands 16-19, alongside a good group of other veteran owned businesses.

If you're coming through, come and find us. A conversation in person beats another email.

Mick's on episode 127 of the Veteran Business Community podcast.

Army, then ten years designing training at the AFP, corporate consulting then Nucleus Evolution. The through line is training that still works months later when nobody has time to think.

Also covers what we're taking to Land Forces in October.

They're sending an icebreaker to Macquarie Island to pull 24 people off, and the reason is the bit that got me.

Bird flu hasn't even reached the island yet. But if it does, there could be thousands of dead seals a few metres from the station. When it hit Heard Island, 13,000 pups died.

So instead of leaving people there and offering counselling afterwards, they're taking them off. It ends their deployment seven months early and slows down a $370 million rebuild.

Someone decided the mental health of 24 people was worth more than that.

I've worked in a few places that would have left them there and run a wellbeing session about it later.

The Australian Antarctic Division will launch a mission to extract personnel from Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean due to the psychological risk posed by a potential outbreak of bird flu at the remote wildlife sanctuary.

Everyone still talks about this like it's a wellbeing program. It's been safety law since December.

Psychosocial hazards. Stress, bullying, unreasonable workload, the stuff that grinds people down over months. Every state and territory now requires employers to manage that the same way they'd manage a fall risk or a piece of plant.

Most workplaces haven't caught up yet. It came in fairly quietly.

We launched Calm, Safe, Excellence yesterday. Five lessons and a practice app, built here in Perth.

It won't make anyone compliant on its own.

Nothing off a shelf will. But the duty is real, and the training still has to be worth doing.

Four months of work goes live on Tuesday Sept 1.

Five lessons, an app, and a lot of arguing with myself about what to cut.

The version that ships is about half the size of the version I first wrote.

That's usually the sign it's ready.

Most workplace resilience training runs in exactly the wrong order. Here's the order it has to go in.

Here's something nobody in L&D likes to say out loud: most workshops don't change behaviour. Not because the content is bad. Not because the facilitators aren't good. Learning something for a day and actually changing how you operate under pressure are two different things. The first takes a workshop...
