Navigating a large hospital can be a daunting task for patients, visitors, and even healthcare professionals.

The complex layout, multiple levels, and the plethora of departments can create confusion and frustration for those who use hospitals, without a clear idea of where they need to be. That’s where wayfinding is paramount; it can save everyone’s time, reduce anxiety, enhance the overall experience of the hospital visit and most crucially: save lives.

So what makes an effective wayfinding strategy for hospitals?

One of the biggest mistakes is overcomplicating things. A crowded and confusing wayfinding system not only fails to deliver its purpose but also frustrates the users. Therefore, keep it simple; an easy-to-navigate strategy that is organised, aesthetically pleasing, yet informational is the ideal wayfinding solution for hospitals.

Consistency plays an essential role in creating an effective wayfinding system for hospitals. The colours, fonts, and graphics used in the signs should be uniform and easily recognisable. Inconsistencies in wayfinding material create confusion, which can lead to missed appointments, late arrivals, and a general sense of frustration.

Collaborating with an expert signage manufacturer will result in effective wayfinding strategies. The key to creating an effective wayfinding system is to keep it simple, maintain it regularly, and make it accessible for all.

Architectural office signage refers to a bespoke signage package that has been specifically designed and implemented with the company brand values as the central theme. The signs can incorporate information and directions about the building and facilities, whilst complementing, and even becoming part of, the décor.

Introducing a cohesive wayfinding strategy with artfully designed signage can make a positive difference to communications, productivity and morale.

Why do offices need architectural signage?

Office buildings can be large and complex places with a myriad of facilities and rooms, but similar layouts across many floors. A wayfinding strategy improves navigation for employees and visitors.

Depending on when the space was built, there can be little to no personality or decoration to create a nice atmosphere to work in.

Architectural signage adds both form and function by allowing organisations to highlight their unique branding and easily direct employees and visitors through their space.

xsign provided the external signage at Dock Offices in Canada Water for creative agency f.r.a, who led on the design process. The scheme was developed for British Land as part of their placemaking strategy for this vibrant London district. Dock Offices is a Grade II listed former Dock Managers office.

The external signage package features a series of totem signs and wall-mounted signage, designed to be in-keeping with the space. We manufactured powder-coated aluminium wayfinding totems with tenant directory panels, mechanically fixed to custom fabricated frameworks and securely anchored to reinforced concrete foundations.

Additionally, we produced 10mm aluminium panels with white SAV graphics, resin-fixed aluminium panels with router-cut detailing, and wall-mounted signs incorporating concealed fixings and black PVC risers for depth and contrast.

Does high-end residential accommodation benefit from architectural signage?

In residential buildings, the branding of the developers or building owners is often a strong part of the visual strategy. The representation of the brand throughout the building is often very important to help residents to feel a part of a high value community, and great signage is crucial to that. The quality of the signage products used is relational to the building and the brand. Great signage to showcase a great brand.

High quality signage plays a pivotal role in helping users to navigate the residential space. Whilst there is a need for functional wayfinding, emphasis in high-end residential spaces should be placed on how to make the space feel unique. Use of bespoke materials and designs can ensure luxury accommodation has a luxury feel.

We're able to help architects and designers specify high quality signage for luxury residential accommodation, across the UK. Just message us.

Updating and upgrading computer, security and operational systems is normal for a business, but why does updating signage and wayfinding get ignored?

Wayfinding signage is one of the most important interactions your staff and customers have within your building. It doesn’t matter if you are in an office, hospital, hotel or educational facility, how frustrating is it if you can’t find your way around because of a lack of signage? Even worse: the signage is out of date or unclear.

Wayfinding signage should be looked at regularly, considering customer service, employee wellbeing and health and safety.

When was the last time your organisation reviewed its wayfinding signage?

➡️ Is it easy to understand?
➡️ Legible?
➡️ Accessible?

It's easy to forget how often the dynamics of a building change. If the wayfinding signage has not been updated for some time it is possible that room numbers and departments have moved or changed. Have the signs been changed to match the move? Do you have a signage system that allows for those changes?

If you need some support with a wayfinding strategy, or would like to know more about a signage system that is purpose-built for the flux and change that takes place in modern buildings, give us a shout.

We are very proud to have delivered a bespoke reception sign for at their London office.

We have supplied and installed a cut 3mm brushed stainless steel logo, mounted on locators. The outcome is a striking, sculptural piece that feels completely at home in a creative studio.

Most of the time we are working with architects and their clients to blend a signage scheme seamlessly with a design scheme. Every now and then the architect is working on something a little closer to home, and of course we are delighted to support the vision.
